  • Have you heard of metabolic syndrome?

Howdy ADBB! Last night I heard in the news that a new research study on Metabolic Syndrome (whatever that is) shows that people have a higher chance of devolping diabetes and hypertension if they eat 2-3 servings of meat/chicken a day than those who eat the same amount a week.

Holy smokes I thought! In the Atkins world, we would all have that syndrome and we would all be developing all kinds of diseases.

    If only they knew..............

Re: Have you heard of metabolic syndrome?

Don't fret... there's always another study out there to say the opposite was found true for what any random study comes up with..LOL..

Did the news happen to mention their source, or any good supporting facts?

I would really like to see that study. The matabolic syndrone is brought about from too much processed carbs. Got a link? Who ran the story?

Maybe. But What ELSE were they eating? Remember, all the studies that "proved" high fat diets raised unhealthy fats in the blood were alsoi high carb.

Re: Have you heard of metabolic syndrome?

You know all the stuff Dr A has about the interconnedted effects of insulin - overweight, diabetes, heart disease and so on? That IS metabolic syndrome. Atkins sorts it out, even though the reports make it sound like it would cause it. And the beat goes on. *sigh*

I'm on Atkins because of it - in a sort of round about way. A friend of mine was having all the same signs of poor health as me, but went to a very forward looking doc about it. After she had had loads of tests etc, the doc sat her down and basically asked her a heap of questions which we later realised was very close to the list in the Atkins book. It seemed uncanny at the time - how the doc could know exactly how she was feeling even when it came to things they had never discussed.

Then she was told she had metabolic syndrome and that Atkins was pretty much the only way to go to sort out not just her weight but her health, low fat/low calorie dieting simply would not work given that set of symptoms. I had the same symptoms, so I joined her.

              Bah to metabolic syndrome!

Re: Have you heard of metabolic syndrome?

Elsy, here is a definition of metabolic syndrome from medicinenet.com.

                How is metabolic syndrome defined?

The definition of metabolic syndrome depends on which group of experts is doing the defining. Based on the guidelines from the 2001 National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III), any three of the following traits in the same individual meet the criteria for the metabolic syndrome:
                1. Abdominal obesity: a waist circumference over 102 cm (40 in) in men and over 88 cm (35 inches) in women.
                2. Serum triglycerides 150 mg/dl or above.
                3. HDL cholesterol 40mg/dl or lower in men and 50mg/dl or lower in women.
                4. Blood pressure of 130/85 or more.
                5. Fasting blood glucose of 110 mg/dl or above. (Some groups say 100mg/dl)
The World Health Organization (WHO) has slightly different criteria for the metabolic syndrome:
                1. High insulin levels, an elevated fasting blood glucose or an elevated post meal glucose alone with at least 2 of the following criteria:
                • Abdominal obesity as defined by a waist to hip ratio of greater than 0.9, a body mass index of at least 30 kg/m2 or a waist measurement over 37 inches.
                1. Cholesterol panel showing a triglyceride level of at least 150 mg/dl or an HDL cholesterol lower than 35 mg/dl.
                2. Blood pressure of 140/90 or above (or on treatment for high blood pressure).

Silly! I already read the book several times. I was being sarcastic. I guess I didn't make my point in my original thread. It was meant to be sarcastic in the way that they made it look like metabolic syndrome should be treated by eating just 2-3 servings of lean meat/chicken a week. That's why I said "If only they would kow" meaning that they got it all wrong.

Thanks everyone for the comments and detailed explanations. Hey, I enjoyed reading them very much. Extremely good information.

The funniest thing is that I just finished reading an aricle on this month's Reader's Digest and it suggests the exact same thing. Go figure...

Talking of metabolic syndrome here is a link to a programme broadcast yesterday on the BBC which should be available till next Monday

                    Metabolic Syndrome

People with high blood sugar and raised blood pressure – along with fat around the abdomen and high cholesterol levels – may have Metabolic Syndrome.

This cluster of symptoms means an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.

In this edition of Case Notes, Dr Mark Porter and his guest, Professor Tom Sanders, Head of the Nutritional Sciences Division at King's College London, explore what can be done about Metabolic Syndrome, from changing lifestyle, diet and exercise, to taking medication.
During the programme one recommendation was to eat a low carb diet, though the 'A' word wasnt mentioned!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Have you heard of metabolic syndrome?

On Jan. 24, the evenng news reported that a study showed that people who ate 2 or more servings of red meat per day were 26% more likely to get metabolic syndrome than those who ate it twice a week. Here is a link to the story on CBS.

Here is an excerpt from the story:

The Western diet followers ate refined grains, processed meat, red meat, fried foods, eggs, and soda and not much fish, fruit, vegetables, or whole-grain foods.

The prudent diet followers ate more fruits, vegetables, fish, seafood, poultry, whole grains, and low-fat dairy foods.

Once again the medical establishment ignores consumption of refined carbs.
