    Greetings ADBB:

First of all, thanks for all the support. You guys are great and I can't wait to share my successes with all of you.

On to my question. I read on the boards that you are supposed to drink 8 glasses of water a day plus one additional for each 25 pounds you have to lose.

That is so much water. Can someone direct me to the reason or tell me that they drank that much water and it worked for them? I never used to drink water at all and now I have to drink 128 oz. a day....it's kind of intimidating.

Any info would be appreciated, and thanks again.
    Tim

      Re: Water...water...everywhere

I drink at least 3 litres a day, though usually it's nearer to 4 and sometimes over that. That would mean anything from 120 up to 150 oz on a normal day. I know it sounds a lot. Actually, now that I have converted it to fl oz (never did before) I'm a bit stunned myself.

Basically I have two litre bottles which I fill in the morning. When the first gets empty I refill it. And so on. And I have at least one with me all the time and I just keep on drinking.

Luckily I work from a home office, which means I am pretty much always close to a bathroom - and I rarely pass one when I am out of the house!

I have no idea how much the water has contributed for me, though I really suspect it's quite a bit. I sort of eased off on it in the run up to christmas as I was not working in the office much and was out and about more for various reasons, and my weight loss slowed right down, although I was eating more too - all legal food, just more than I usually would.

Before I started I was drinking 2 litres of coke a day - this is definitely better.

        hello
Do you have a copy of the book? Page 76 says:
"Drinking the recommended 8 glasses or more of water daily is essential to avoid constipation...."

There are a few other references in the book, but basically water consumption helps with energy, gives you a feeling of fullness and helps lubricate your joints and discs, skin....etc etc.

If you're not used to drinking it in large volumes, try experimenting. For example, I cannot stand chilled water. I like it room temperature, which sounds kinda gross, but that's the easiest way for me to get it down. Sometimes I put a slice of lemon in it. Sometimes I drink hot water with a slice of lemon. I also have a thing where I have to finish at least 1 litre of water by 1 p.m., and then I have to get started on the rest. At first you pee like crazy, but after a while that seems to settle down. You've just gotta do it, so find out what works for you.

Hope this helped! There's a great water post on here somewhere which I'll go try to find for you....

I am pretty much the same way. I am not a fan of cold water, and would much rather have room tempature water.

I simply buy a gallon of water from the store. I buy Poland Springs - you can choose whichever you want. I then drink 1 of those 1 gallon jugs each day. Sometimes I will do it in small amounts throughout the day, but I usually do it in 4-5 big drinks. I simply hold the jug up and drink, drink, drink. Four to five times of that and its gone. 128oz of water, in the body! Thats how I do it.

            Re: Water...water...everywhere

            Hi,

I know it seems like a lot (twices what is "recommended), but you have to realize its based on an "average sized person." Also, the fat remnents have to leave your body somehow and so you need to give them something to ride on. It seems hard to drink so much but once you get in a habit you wll see it gets easier. I do drink between 100-133 per day and i can tell on the scale and how i feel when i don't. The funny thing is i do not like water at all, before going on the plan i would go weeks without drinking any water only diet soda.

So how do i drink sooo much? I have 2 22oz bottles i use. I know i have to drink between 3 and 4 of them a day. I drink 1 before i leave in the morning. Then i open the next one and "depending how heaving traffic is" as i may be in traffic for a while, I will start on the next bottle. I have a rule i need to finish this bottle and the next before i leave work and i usually use my own body to do it. When you drink so much water you do have to pee a lot even once you get use to it you still do more than you are use too. Sooo what i do is everytime i have to pee, i stop and take 5-10 big gulps of water before and then i take 5 gulps after. I also drink 5 gulps before i eat anything. Also, everytime i come to the site i drink, i always have the bottles in front of me and drink whenever i look at them. And 133 oz go down pretty easily throughout the day and i work on the last bottle from after work on. I have found that if i fill the bottles together and especially before i go to bed, its easier, i don't know why but it is.

Good luck, sometimes you just have to think of little tricks that will help you form the habit.

Oh on a silly note, sometimes when i am peeing lol i sit there and say -- OUT DAMN FAT OUT! yes, i am weird.

                Re: Water...water...everywhere

                Just thought of something else....
On this board there is a water challenge, in the "Challenges" forum...here...
I think the Century Club forum does one too, but I couldn't find it. Anyways, if you've never joined a challenge before, it may seem intimdating to do so, but trust me, they are one of the best things going here! You challenge yourself basically and just by doing that formally, it makes you feel accountable to everyone else in the challenge. You also meet really nice people that you otherwise may not have. I would really encourage you to try this....the next water challenge will start February, as they do them monthly.
Elsy is right...the water carries those fat cells out! What really motivates me is the fact that it's a lubricant for joints and discs...I've been down and out with disc problems in my back and if I can help those little things to be healthy in such a simple way, I'm doing it!
Best of luck with your Atkins journey UrbanShaman!

                  Re: Water...water...everywhere

I'd read somewhere that if you drink the water cold you lose weight faster, as it takes more energy than you would think, for your body to heat that cold water to body temperature. I don't know if it's scientifically correct or not, but having tried it, it seems to work for me. Now I drink my water pretty cold, to help maintain.

                    Re: Water...water...everywhere

Thank you all so much for the great information. I do have the book and that's why I was puzzled by the extra amount of water. It makes sense that I would need more than an average person because of my weight. That's so awesome that the water carries out the fat. That will definitely encourage me to drink more water. I'll be sure to read that sticky as well.

I noticed that if I drink something like a "Coke" it can last all day - but now that I am drinking water I drink 100-120 oz a day (or more) without even thinking about it... other than I need to move my office into the ladies room !

I drink roughly 90 ounces of water a day. Sometimes more sometimes less. I'm constantly drinking. If i'm up there is water in my hand or very close by! Your body does eventually get used to it. Two days ago I finally stopped getting woken up in my sleep to go to the bathroom! It is very essential though and I can't believe I've survived this long without drinking it on a regular basis. I would maybe drink 8 ounces a week!

I also needed to work my way up to the recommended amount of water, start out with 20 oz bottle and then filled from there. I drink mine room temperature and through a straw, I seem to get more in. I certainly can notice a difference when I don't drink water! I feel dehydrated (and there is no weight loss), lack of energy and dry.... I think it does help although you couldn't have told me that before hand.

Lots of good advice here, find a way to work it in - that works for you! I'm looking forward to seeing your post in a week or two on how you are doing with the water consumption and how it makes you feel!

Such great information and encouragement. I've decided to try the two 32 oz bottles. I keep one at my desk at work so it can stare accusingly at me if it's still full and then I swap them out. I've managed to get the 8 8oz glasses in so far these past two days and I'm going to gradually increase. Sad thing is, I'm a singer and all of my singer friends drink gallons of water. It's time to jump on the bandwagon.
