  • sick and starting over

For the past 4 days I have been sick and I have not followed the plan. When you are running a fever with an awful sore throat you just don't feel like salad and steak.

I am officially starting over today. I have come too far to turn back now.

I have lost 12.5 pounds this month and I refuse to gain it back!

    Thanks for the ongoing support!

    Re: sick and starting over

    Hi Miranda,
I was sick last week too. I had been on atkins 2 weeks and lost 11 pounds, then I got a horrible stomach bug where I didn't eat a thing for 3 days. So when my appetite came back, my poor stomach was a mess. I decided to eat like normal for a few days to get my body back to normal health. I gained 5 pounds back. I have a feeling alot of it was water weight, from vomiting and the bloating from dehydration. Regardless. I am back on track and trying to stay motivated.
    Good Luck!!
    No excuses, do the work!

I must say there is a terrible misconception in this thread. Neediing to eat "normal" when you get sick. Your idea of normal will change if you stick with Atkins. One of the typical changes when doing Atkins is a significant reduction of getting sick. Avoiding sugar will supercharge your immune system.

Glad you're feeling better. Good for you, for getting right back on track.
I find soup is great when I'm feeling fluey and ill. Warming and legal (as long as you cook it legal!).

(Hudson)I agree that normal will change, however at this point (on induction) it hasn't. I know, for myself, my body is still getting used to atkins. So at the point when I was sick, normal consisted of crackers, toast, things my stomach is used to and could handle with a stomach bug. I also don't have the arsenol of low carb alternatives yet. So I had to go with what I could handle, and my usual grilled chicken and salad for example wasn't going to cut it.
Glad to be back on though and look forward to gaining that normalcy as I go on! Thanks!

I completely agree. The way I eat is normal. If a person thinks of eating a high carb diet as normal then doing Atkins will always feel like a forced diet and I think that leads to failure.

And you will find that over time your normal will change!

I'm glad you guys are feeling better, but this concerned me... "like normal"? Thinking of Atkins as not 'normal', or a way to eat JUST if you want to lose, well... that's a sure-fire way to fail. I just hate to see people do well with the plan, and then give it up because it's not 'normal'. Those are the people back on the boards for another try because they gained it all back "eating normal" instead of maintaining. Calling the way you ate that got you fat in the first place "normal" is a huge red flag to me. You might want to think about that is all. Soup when you are sick is fine. But you really never, ever need crackers in it, you know?
100 pounds gone forever from 12/03-11/04. Thank you Dr. Atkins, may you rest in peace...

BTW you can always make flax crackers to go in your legal lowcarb home made soup!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                    Re: sick and starting over

I love soup when I'm sick. If Atkins disallowed a good homemade chicken soup, the I'd have to rebel. That's the great thing about this WOE though. It doesn't deny you anything that's good for you. Personally, I would want to eat the wholesome, good food like soup and softly cooked eggs while sick than go back to white bread and sugar. Those are how I got fat and I don't need to gain weight and be sick too. Great to have you back. Hang in there.

Brilliant tidbits like this is part of what makes ADBB so very helpful. I wouldn't have even thought about that.

                        Re: sick and starting over

thanks for all of the replies. Unfortunately after originally posting I ended up going to the doctor. I was diagnosed with a viral infection and I am still under the weather so unfortunately I have not yet returned to the atkins way of life.

As far as cooking legal I don't really feel like cooking and having the hubby cook for me.... well.... we'll not go there.

I have to return to work tomorrow and if I can make it feeling all right my plan is to start induction all over again on Saturday and take it from there. It upsets me that this is the longest and the best that I have ever done on changing my way of eating and I had to go and blow it by getting sick and eating carbohydrate sick food.

Thanks again for all of the replies and support. I am going to get some rest now.
