    Re: Low blood sugar?

Just remember one thing regarding the OJ.....everyone's life differs. In that I mean there are times where an individual may not be able to eat every few hrs. and a lapse in several hours goes by along with a drop in blood sugar. Ironically this happened to me today. I was doing a clinical rotation in the hospital on the labor and delivery unit. I had eaten at 6 a.m. and had NO time to eat until about 8 hours later. This was because I was scrubbed up in the OR while a C-Section was going on. I had to follow the patient pre operatively, through surgery, then post op. Regardless, my sugar level was so low I got the shakes, and felt really sick. I grabbed some m and m's from a collegue bec. it was the only thing I could get my hands on at the moment without abandoning my patient. I am not allowed to bring in any kind of food into the OR so I had no choice really.....with all that being said.....if necessary to combat an episode of hypoglycemia, some OJ or a piece of candy will not necessarily throw your body out of ketosis if you are on induction, because the daily carb. count is 20 which is very low. When I spoke previously about the OJ I was trying to say that if it is a NECESSITY do not be afraid to help your body......a few hours of not showing ketosis on a stick is far better than becomming very ill. Thanks for letting me get on my "soapbox."
This is me a few yrs ago at my ideal weight of 130

And this is me now on the right in the black and white shirt...

And I will get back there...I AM DETERMINED! :D

I agree. I know everyone wants to be trim and slim but if I have to decide between drinking some OJ and hitting the floor face first because my blood sugar has gotten so low, I'm drinking the orange juice and then as soon as I can I'm going to have some roast beef.

Some people, maybe because of stringent workplace rules or other things like that can't snack on cheese all day long.
I'm a teacher and our principal doesn't allow any food expect for peppermints and things outside of the cafeteria. My class has lunch at 11:30. I eat breakfast at 7am. I have episodes where I get a severe dizzy spell because of blood sugar. They're not everyday but when they happen, it's at like 11:15...a few minutes before lunch. At those times, instead of falling on one of the kids in my class, I will not hesitate to grab a hard candy from the teacher next door and pop it in.

You have to take care of yourself first.

I am happy that someone on this board agrees with me...I though I was the only one who felt this way. Being on a "way of life" eating program is going to aid in a healthy lifestyle. One in a while however, a deviation may be necessary to keep yourself healthy. Again, everyone should do what is best for them.

How low is blood sugar to be called hypo? I have my mom do a check on me every now and again and I can be at 67 as a fasting morning and it doesn't bother me. How low is too low to be considered healthy? Does anyone know?

My finace who is diabetic says that anything below 60 is too low.

There have been times where I've eaten a burger, fries and a large shake and tested my glucose an hour later and was just at 65 or 70. I've never been diagnosed with having diabetes though.

Thanks, good to know. Like I said it doesn't bother me being in the upper 60's
but have heard others say they get the shakes when theirs drop to that.
