LOL...Tourist trade to Mississippi...that just made me lol... There are maybe three places in Mississippi people go to in my opinion. Tupelo - Birthplace of Elvis (It's much nicer to go 2 hours up to Memphis to see Graceland.) The Gulf Coast (Biloxi, etc) because of the casinos and partying (but it is much nicer to go 2 hours east to Florida to nicer beaches to party) or to Vicksburg to see where "we lost the war" -rolls her eyes- and we have casinos there BUT IT IS MUCH NICER TO CROSS THE BRIDGE AND PARTY IN LOUISIANA! And people wonder why I won't come back.

Exactly what I was thinking. It's already been proven that no one can bring a lawsuit against McDonald's for "making" them fat, so even if this were originally concieved as a defensive measure, it is rediculous.

I hope the voting population of MS see this for the waste of their time and taxes that it is and run these narrow-minded, narrow-scoped politicians out of office come re-election time.

It's for real. My first thought was to check Snopes, but I googled and it's in all the papers. Jimmy Moore is blogging about it. Two Republicans and one Democrat introduced the bill.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

This MUST be a joke! I can't believe that something like this could ever pass in a democratic, free country. How discriminating! This sets Mississippi back decades.

That's just silly. It's probably one of those proposed bills that don't have a chance and their only purpose is to raise awareness. MS has such high rate of obesity that denying service to the obese would probably put any restaurant there out of business!

Re: NEW LAW IN MISSISSIPPI. You can't eat here. You're too fat.

I am an obese man, and that's the reason why I'm here.

I'm shocked and appalled by this law.

However, I can't work out the reason why.
I don't think any career politician would vote such an unpopular law into practise.
Even the occasional politician that proposes an unpopular law, because they have a strong belief that it will improve a situation that needs improving, must see it's lunacy.

Can someone help me? What percentage of Americans are obese?
I think that overweight is 30%, and obese is 20%, but those numbers are only from some vague memory of something I read 5 years ago.

I ask, because whatever that answer is, that's the number of potential votes lost.

I still keep coming back to the question in my head, why?
It can't be "to help the obese loose weight", surly?

Create a law to stop the obese eating in a restaurant can't be best answer to the overweight problem in America.

Sounds more like those three politicians shared a real bad bottle of Tequila the night before.
                    Hayden.

That could be the answer why !!

According to this http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline...ould-make.html about two thirds of people in MS are overweight or obese! That's really high.

Wow, I'm surprised how shocked so many are here. No, it will not pass now but sooner or later something "milder" will and it'll grow from there.

Just remember, folks, the slippery slope started with cigarette smoking. If you're going to allow the government to make laws banning smoking in private businesses regardless of what they or their customers want, then what is to stop them making laws on anything else that controls what you indulge in?

For the record, I don't smoke. I quit about 14 years ago. But I know socialism when I see it... And I'm not going to argue about "second-hand smoke"... Junk science.

Obviously MS legislators have WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much time on their hands.

That is TOTALLY different. Whether you want to discuss second-hand smoke and its dangers or not, IT DOES POSE A HEALTH RISK TO EVERYONE AROUND IT, and personally, I HAVE A RIGHT TO CLEAN AIR WHEN I EAT. Smokers have a right to smoke, but not in MY face. Obesity is a personal thing .. and doesn't pose any risk to anyone else.

IMO government has NO RIGHT getting involved in what I eat. That's how we've come about with the low fat dogma and a bigger problem of obesity, diabetes and heart disease!
