  • Flax carb count?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I made a flax bread last night, using two cups of ground flax seed (ground in coffee grinder), and for the life of me I can't figure out what the carb count is for the two cups. Everywhere I look it says something different. Anyone know what it is? Thanks in advance!

      Re: Flax carb count?

You are right - even fitday has different counts for the unground seeds!
      flax seeds 1 cup = 54 less 25 fiber = 29 net carbs
      seeds. flaxseeds 1 cup = 53 less 43 fiber = 10 net carbs
Has your pack of seeds got any nutrition info on it? If so I would go by the manufacturer's numbers.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Drat - I typed a reply which disappeared because the server is busy!! So here goes again.

The USDA database lists this for flax seeds
        1 cup seeds (168 grams weight) = 48.53 carbs less 45.9 fiber = 2.63 net carbs
        1 cup ground seeds (112 grams weight) = 32.35 carbs less 30.6 fiber = 1.75 net carbs
        Confusing, isnt it?!?!?

          Re: Flax carb count?

I checked on the Atkins website and there was no listing for flax, and I have lent my book out so I couldn't look in it. So yeah, still confused! Unfortunately the package was thrown out long ago and the seeds were in a different container. Thanks for the help though!

            Re: Flax carb count?

Did you use 2 cups of flax seeds or did you grind enough to make 2 cups of meal? The USDA numbers Elizellen cited are the same - it's just that the meal takes up more volume than the seeds so there is less of it in 1 cup.
            In other words,
            168 gms seeds = 48.53 carbs less 45.9 fiber = 2.63 net carbs
            is the same as
            112 gms meal = 32.35 carbs less 30.6 fiber = 1.75 net carbs

                Re: Flax carb count?

This is why I bought my cute little digital kitchen scale. Then there's no doubt of whether you fluffed the seeds or compressed/packed them in, etc.
Of course, I dirty a lot of dishes weighing everything

                    Re: Flax carb count?

It was two cups of ground flax.

How much is 112 grams of meal? I didn't weigh the flax. I can't believe how confusing it is just to find the carb count of two cups of ground flax! Grrr!

The bread was awesome, it was Books Sweet but Legal Flax Bread, though I made a savory version. It tastes great and helps move things along if you know what I mean.

That is a great recipe and it is good to have something you can make sandwiches from sometimes

Be careful if you are on induction not to overdo it - remember flax is allowed then only in enough quantity to cure constipation. and dont forget to up your water too!!

                          Hey Duchess,

Not sure what grocery stores you have around you, but I know Harris Teeter, The Fresh Market, and stores like The Vitamin Shoppe carry flax seeds and meal. If a store near you carried it, you at least wouldn't have to pay shipping!

Oooh I didn't know the Vitamin Shoppe had it!! Arg! There aren't any organic or health food markets in my city, which is weird because we have EVERYTHING else.. but thanks for telling me about the Vitamin Shoppe! I'll definately go there instead!
