Wow, that's interesting. And sobering... I was just about to write that I am doing induction and have only lost like 5 lbs in 2 weeks, but am now stalled and it's annoying. The only "cheat" is my 2-3 cans of diet coke each day. Well, now I know. As of today, I will eliminate it and see what happens. I've done induction before without eliminating diet coke and it's been successful. Maybe this time it's different. Who knows?

I think diet drinks may cause a few problems, but this study looks kind of goofy to me.

Most folks with metabolic syndrone are overweight. Most over weight people at least try diet drinks.

You could also say that worrying about being over weight causes people to be overweight with the same logic. People get overweight. They start to worry about it. So worrying about being over weight is linked to being over weight. Which came first, the diet soda or the metabolic syndrone. Correlation does not mean there is necessarily a link. Or we could say that microwave ovens have caused the obesity problem in this country. Microwave oven use has gone up roughly as has our obesity?

I see your point. I didn't actually read the study, but I know there are lots of wacky ideas out there. But in any case, I think diet drinks aren't the best thing in the world to be putting in our bodies. It'll be an interesting experiment to see what happens when I eliminate it. Perhaps it has something to do with the "cephalic response" where insulin is released when something sweet is ingested, regardless of whether what's ingested is sugar/carb or not. Gary Taubes suggests as much.

Yes, I have eliminated diet drinks and have seen more control of what I eat. Less cravings and my joints feel better.
