  • What my professor said about low carb dieting...

I was in my anatomy and physiology class Thursday and we were discussing body chemistry and molecular structures of sugars and then we moved on to fats and good fats versus bad fats and how the bonds are moved around but different to make transfats and saturated fats (Means the carbon chain is saturated with hydrogen ions - I never knew) Any way, in the discussion he said "This is why low carb diets are a very effective at to lose weight, but..." and when he paused and just knew he was going to go into how they were bad for you all around and not a good diet to maintain for life but then he said "you have to be strict because if you cheat, you will gain weight!"

I wonder how many people will be starting low carb diets in my class?

Funny thats what I always tell people .......... you can't "try" Atkins you have to "DO" atkins ............ and you have to do it right ........... my mom is always "trying" atkins and eats a bit here and there of whatever she feels she wants at that moment. She just doesn't get why it works so well for me and not for her ........ after all it's just a few bites?????? LORDY MOM READ THE BOOK!!!!!!!!

I did a report on the Atkins diet for my chemestry class when I was in college. I got an A, and it was awesome because at the time, I was losing 50lbs, and everyone in my class could see.. AND my chemestry teacher was a body builder, so he knew the truth. XD

LOL, Heidi, throw the book at her!! Moms are like nurses..the worst patients.

Dutchess, when I was in nursing school, I did a presentation on Atkins (Got an A too!) and about how the diet is healthy. They don't understand how many good veggies we are required to eat, nor how much water we are to drink. They only hear one word probably...

          BACON!!!

All people uneducated on the subject think we eat is fatty meat and eggs all day long!

That's exactly what they think. They're like, "But all that meat will give you hear disease!" blah blah blah. Then I explained it and they were like, "But that's the South Beach Diet".. -_- Noooo...

I know, it is nice to hear someone say you need to eat fat...good fats. People act like there is no such thing usually.

Dutchess, LOL that is so frustrating! They definitely fall into the category "a little bit of knowledge is dangerous" If they actually did the diet I bet they would be eating more clean foods and veggies than they ever have.

Julie, I haven't told him, I sit near the back of the class and I already answered some questions completely different than the rest of the class. He asked if water conducted electricity. Everyone said yes and I said no. (pure water doesn't, it is the substances in the water that conducts it) And I knew that lye was made from ashes to make soap in pioneer days and I knew the exact process to make soap so by the end of class people were looking at me weird anyway. My immediate table knows I am on it. I am just going to let them see me eat my good salad on break and watch my weight melt off. That'll show the proof is in the puddin'.

Good! There are more people than we think, out there educated about Atkins. Unfortunately, there are a lot more who are not. I've had peeps tell me," Oh I just can't eat that much meat!" I'm like "What? You don't eat anymore meat than you normally would!" "You eat lots of healthy veggies and fruits and grains depending on what rung your on" Their response is" RUNGS? What are you talking about?" "Exactly!" is what I think to myself. People think they know, but they don't. I am so glad to see this post.

I've had people ask me if it was true that I HAD to eat bacon at every meal, and that it was considered a free food on Atkins.

Who would follow a diet where bacon was a free food? And why would they think I would follow a diet like that?

I tell people no refined sugar or flour, and lots of veggies and they nod in agreement. I mention Atkins, and I'm instantly at death's door, according to them. People are cute.

Re: What my professor said about low carb dieting...

Maybe in your next class, your professor will point out that if the A students don't continue studying, they might lose their A, and that if musclebound bodybuilders quit their workouts, they might lose muscle?

Hey, pointing out the obvious is better than repeating misconceptions and untruths, so he is certainly on the right track. You've got gold with this guy!

For the past 6½ years, individuals I come across in the medical field never have a bad thing to say about starch/sugar-free eating. Ever. At worst, the attitude might be, "Oh, excellent! Wish I could do it ... " I remember when my Biology professor was saying how great low-carbohydrate eating is, I was very surprised because I'd only made goal only a few months previously. I raised my hand and concurred, mentioning that I'd recently lost several dress sizes this way, and I'm sure he appreciated my illustrating the point he was making.

Since then, it's been one medical professional after the next, most of them my own doctors, singing Atkins praises once I explain to them what I eat and what I avoid. When my site visitors write to me asking how I deal with naysayer doctors, I can't relate - it's just never happened.

I know, if they took the time to look at what we actually ate, they would be amazed. We actually didn't start having so many of our diseases (especially diabetes) until we stopped eating like hunter/gatherers. Grant it, we had a much shorter "shelf life" back then but now kids are getting "adult onset" diabetes mellitus before they even get puberty!

I went out to lunch with a friend recently and ordered an entree that should come with potatoes without the potatoes that came with it and just ate the chicken. She was so confused about why I did that so I just said "I'm cutting out things like potatoes and white flour." She totally got that! But then later I mentioned Atkins and she thought I must be crazy! But you have to eat so much meat and cheese and no vegetables, she cried! I looked down at our plates- she was having a pizza with cheese and all kinds of meats on it, I was having chicken breast stuffed with spinach and a salad. I didn't say anything about her meal but just said that I'm eating healthier than I ever have and feeling great about it. It's funny how saying low carb even is ok but when I say atkins people worry!
