  • The Hardest Thing...

So, a few weeks ago, I told my mom that I was thinking about trying Atkins. She flipped out on me going on about how it can cause kidney issues and how some friends of hers tried it and they looked just awful. I had done some research on Atkins by that point, and nothing I had read had swayed me away from giving it a shot. With that being said, is there anyone else that had a bad reaction from loved ones or friends when the idea of Atkins was brought up?

I think whatever "diet" or WOL you chose, someone will always have an opinion.
I've tried all different kids of diets and Atkins was the only one that really worked for me, so here I am, back again....and btw, my DOCTOR recommended I try it the first time.

lol I had pretty much the same response when I told my mom that I was thinking of trying Atkins. But I did my own research. I lost 48 lbs on my first go with Atkins.

Yeah some people do have really bad reactions. I usually just say is being fat more healthy?! LOL. I do what works, and it works for me. And I really don't want to get diabetes, most of my family got it at this age from being overweight. When I told my best friend I was doing atkins, she told me that it was bad and my organs would be eating themselves LOL. I had to laugh at that one. Some people are just misinformed.

At this point, the pros outweigh the cons for me. Im sick of being over weight and I'm going to do this no matter what anyone has to say about it!

Lucky for you, Atkins isn't high-protein to begin with, but low-carb! It is never necessary to consume more than one's RDA for protein on this program; someone who does is doing so entirely of their own accord.

Glad she didn't change your plan to get healthy and active. So many people have bad reactions to others who are trying to improve their lives. I believe many have good intentions, but they listen to hear-say rather than research the facts. No matter what we do in life we'll run into others who are jealous or have opinions that are negative on what we do. Each of us have take responsibility and research and plan our own actions. I was skeptical at first of Atkins, but I've lost 130 pounds, my medical conditions have all disappeared and I'm happier than I've been the first 40 years of my life. I'm glad I didn't give in to doubt and quit. You can do it. Read the book (let your mom read it too). Make a plan and don't look back.

                  Re: The Hardest Thing...

I've found that a lot of people are misinformed, including professionals. I work at a hospital with a bunch of nurses who read me the riot act regularly. Several of the more kinder open minded ones have listened and watched what I'm eating (I'm diabetic-one is too and the other ones husband is). They know what a hard time I've had with my blood sugars, even since being on an insulin pump, and after showing them my blood sugar readings since re-beginning this WOL, they are impressed. They've both told me that they didnt think I could have any veggies, and were surprised when I told them my veggies choices and 3 cups a day and that yes I could have all the protein I wanted really, but when you aren't feeding the sugar hunger monster, you just aren't hungry and I don't eat more than the normal amount of meat-usually less than they do. They also were misinformed re: ketosis and ketoacidosis-which was a concern for them since I'm diabetic. I did tell them that although both of my drs threatened to fire me as a patient a couple yrs ago when I was eating this way, my endocrinologist has had a change of heart and is now all for it and since she's in charge of the diabetes, she is also in charge of my diet. Mind you, this change is slowly coming to the medical community and is helped by those of us chosing this WOL and doing it correctly. I live in a smaller midwest community and change is very slow here! LOL

I'm glad you have not let others sway your choice, and in the future, maybe it would help if asked that you are eating whole, fresh food & veggies and staying away from starches/sugars.
