Re: i really miss juice
Juice is fruit or vegetable flavored sugar water. You're better off eating the whole fruit or the whole vegetable. I read that it takes about 6 oranges to make one glass of orange juice. It takes a few minutes to drink a glass of juice, but how many minutes would it take to eat 6 oranges in one sitting?Originally posted by edenedeei love oj and the v8 fusion drinks.. anyway i can maybe have these on maintence
Fruit and vegetable juices may be added to your Atkins during the appropriate rungs of the OWL Phase carb ladder. They are limited to 5 net carbs.

Re: i really miss juice
In spite of the fact that they are constantly touted as healthy I actually think juices are anything but.
Nobody claims that sodas are healthy, because they are basically just sugar and water. But as Meg says, so too are juices, in fact there is often a higher sugar content in juice than there would be in a comparable size glass of soda. Just because the sugar is derived from fuit or vegetables doesn't somehow make it magically healthier. It makes me laugh when the makers of these juices boast on their packs about "NO Added Sugar!" - well, so what, when there is so much of it in there already!!
There may be a few extra vitamins thrown in compared to soda, but if you are getting veg and fruit in your diet they are not adding much.
Most of the 'pure' juices you buy ready made even have the fibre taken out, so unless you make your own and don't strain them you are totally missing out on one of the major advantages of fruit and veg.
Any dentist will tell you that fruit juice is a disaster for teeth, all that sugar and acid too. Yet parents happily give it to their kids in the belief that they are choosing the 'healthy' option.
Eat the fruit when you get to the appropriate rung, but ditch the juice!Kate

Re: i really miss juice
kate, when I worked at the Children's Hospital, the doctors used to say if you took a detailed diet history on any overweight/obese child 9 times out of 10, juice will be in that diet. I remember one 5 year old boy who was about 115 pounds and had severe breathing problems because of his weight (he had so much fat inside his abdomin that it prevented his diaphragm from fully expanding, thereby restricting his air intake.) They put him on a strict diet: no juice, no candy, no chips, etc. He spent the first 2 days of his hospitalization crying---screamming really--- for his juice, candy, etc. And despite it all, his mother would sneak these foods into the hospital for him.
The docs at the Hospital used to tell parents to limit juice for their children, but the American Academy of Pediatrics never put a limit on it until a few years ago.~Megs~

I drink tea. Celestial Seasonings has tea that smells like fruit, so it feels like drinking hot fruit juice. Luckilly there's no carbs and it's caffeine free. ^_^Height 5'1"

Re: i really miss juice
Thankfully I don't like juice, so I didn't have to give it up, but I am always amazed that people think juice is so healthy. I guess it is logical because it is from fruit but I have to agree that it is loaded with sugar and doctors often say to limit children's intake to 1 serving per day. It is better just to let it go and have a piece of fruit when the craving hits (if you are able to depending on what rung you are on).

Re: i really miss juice
Yep - I switched to iced tea. Understand - I cannot take any pills with water - I have an instant gag reflex for any size pill. So taking juice was a staple in my diet. Now I don't even buy it for the kids.... I switched to iced tea and lemonade if I'm desperate (right now I am freezing so evening thinking of lemonade is awful <G>)

Re: i really miss juice
I've only seen this in Cranberry, do you get it in any other flavors?Originally posted by ttdriverI've tried the DIET Ocean Spray and its quite good if you can tolerate Splenda without any issue. Its 2 grams per 8 oz.
But I totally prefer tea.

Re: i really miss juice
I believe the only juice that is really acceptable is tomato juice because when you juice a tomato it creates more lycopene. You don't want store bought because they tend to add a lot of extra stuff in it (carbs, sugar, evil) you would need to make it yourself.
I'm a big tea drinker as well. I love peach and rasberry tea mmm...F 24 5'10 SW - 217 GW 170 restarted atkins 1/14/08 - This time I'm sticking with it!

Re: i really miss juice
edenedee--you will probably find that your tastes will change. I used to be a juice person (pre-Atkins) believing it was "healthier" than soda. When I began Atkins, my tastebuds became much more sensitive and I tasted the natural sweetness of things. When I re-introduced fruits (berries on Rung 4, other fruits on Rung 7) the sweetness was almost overpowering! I could not believe how sweet fruit was (almost sickeningly sweet) and my desire to drink juice has totally dissipated. Whole fruit is MUCH more satisfying (and it contains fiber!) and better for you.
