  • I'm Sorry

I owe this board a huge apology. I am so sorry.
Yesterday I made an offer to share my copy of the book, not even thinking about copy right laws or the impact that I could have on this board. I certainly didnt mean it to be an alternative to buying the book yourself but as a way to "try before you buy" sort of a thing.

Again I publicly apologize to the members here and to the board itself for any harm I may have caused albeit unintentional.

No worries - you were trying to do something nice! I personally commend you for the thought... Your right though about copyright laws (and to be honest I too wouldn't have thought about them).

I'm lost.. I actually lend my book to friends all the time so they can read it and decide if they want to follow this WOE. To me, its like lending a CD. I could see the troubles in reprinting the info though.

            Re: I'm Sorry

I am curious, what was the issue with regard to copyright laws? As far as the legalities there is nothing wrong or illegal with regard to sharing a book or giving a book away, there is a problem with reprinting same.

If sharing or giving or reselling books were an issue there would be MANY libraries in deep trouble, there would be charities in deep trouble and Amazon, Ebay etc would have many people in trouble for attempting to resell their books.

              Re: I'm Sorry

Don't worry Suga, it was an easy mistake to make and everyone knows you didn't intend to do anything dodgy, it was a kind thought.

On the copyright issue, distributing copies on PDF or any other way, is different than lending people a book or selling it second-hand. It's creating a new copy of the book and distributing it - that is what is against copyright law.

It's just like a CD or DVD - you can lend your copy to someone, but you cannot make multiple copies and give them to other people.

I don't believe many people know that copyright also applies to material created on the Internet.

For example, if you come accross an interesting article somewhere and decide to copy and paste it in here, that is a violation of the copyright of the owner of the original article. Ditto with an image - if you see an image you fancy on the internet, you cannot just take it and use it, either as it is or in an altered form, without the permission of the owner of the image.

People can, and have, been sued for doing things like that.

It is also widely believed that in order for copyright to exist it must be registered in some way. This is not true. If you create something - be it a written piece, an image or anything else like that - you automatically own the copyright to it. You don't have to register it or take any action, it is yours and it stays yours until or unless you give or sell the copyright to someone else, or it runs out due to the passage of time (which will be long after your death).

Ahh, i also missed that it was a file not a book that was being shared. NoooooWWWW it makes sense the copyright thing lol. So much for scanning threads and assuming what is being said lol. I just saw, "share my copy of my book." and assumed it was the actual book.

I wondered about this too, doesn't that mean that half of the FAQ's here are infringing upon ANDR?

                        Re: I'm Sorry

As far as I know the FAQs are not direct copies from the book, though they may say much the same thing. They do quote extracts (as do many other posts), but that is not the same thing.

There is a thing called "fair use" which allows extracts to be quoted from a referenced book or article. It is a tricky thing fair use, many court cases have been fought over it and it's not a black and white issue, but in general you can quote short extracts for things like a review or criticism or for purposes of illustration or comment, in news reports, to illustrate lessons and so on.

I think the FAQs would fall under fair use without any problem.

                          Re: I'm Sorry

                          Sounds like another Great Debate......
My reasons for sharing were simple, I am sure that myself as well as many others on this board have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars on various diets and exercise programs as well as the next "Miracle Pill" in hopes of finally shedding the pounds, only to be disappointed that they didnt work. Well the fact of the matter is I refuse to spend another dime on a program, that is without having first hand knowledge that it works. So when I decided to try Atkins I went in search of an online copy so that I could try it without wasting my money if it didnt work. Well I now know that it works and have since purchased my own copy in print but I thought there must be others on this board with the same thoughts.
I now understand the consequences my actions could have caused and wont do that again. I thank all of you for the board and for the support............ohh and the forgiveness.
