  • Discouraged why am I not losing anything?

Sorry all this might be a bit long.

I am currently on day 6 of induction and have only lost 1.8 lbs. I started at 170 and want to lose 35lbs to be at 135 by summer. I know that in DANDR it says to expect a 5-10% loss or the total weight you want to lose which would be 3.5 lbs for me. I get that, but then I see others on the thread I participate in losing more than the 10% in the first week so im curious as to why I am not.

I am in moderate ketosis for the last 2 days. I am taking a multi w/no iron, fish oil, extra B vitamins and MSM. The exercise part is not going well as I only took a walk once this week. I measured myself this morning thinking maybe I lost inches but I have not. I did the spit test this morning and based on that I do have candida. So I guess I need to do something about that. I figured that since im low carbing it that I would be starving it out but I guess its not enough. So if someone can tell me what to get for the candida that would be helpful. I read several threads about it and not sure if I should just get one of those pill thats takes care of it or do all the apple cider stuff or if any of that works. I guess I need to also quit the dairy (cheese, cream) and mushrooms and stuff from my diet too. Does that include eggs?

My sample menu most of the week has been this.

Breakfast 2 scrambled eggs w/2 links pork sausage. It has less thatn 2% of sugar. Im switching over to a chicken one that has no sugar.

Lunch 2 cups salad veggie w/maries blue cheese dressing. Plus either a 2-3oz leftover steak or chops

Dinner 1 cup steamed brocolli or cauliflower, about a 4oz cut of meat (pork or steak) The last 2 nights its been shrimp scampi about 1 1/2 cups worth.

Snack Pork Rinds a good 10-15pcs. Sometimes either Swiss cheese or cream cheese rolled up in turkey cold cut.

My water intake is really good about 80-85oz a day. I think im getting enought fat or is it too much or not enough? My portions are pretty small. DANDR says to eat liberally so I have been. Not stuffing my face but I eat when im hungry and stop when im full.

I dont think im consipated as I have been having a bowel movement every other day.

The first time I tried atkins I lost 18lbs in 2003. Then the last time I was on Atkins back in 2005 I did a pretty good induction and was on it for several months and had no results. I started at about 178 and lost maybe 3-4lbs total on induction and was stuck on 172 for almost 2 months. I was also on a pretty extensive exercise program doing the Body for Life challenge and still no scale loss and very little inches lost.

I was a bit skeptic starting this again because of the experience I had in 2005 but I thought let me give it one more try. However after the first week I get the suspicious feeling that Im about to repeat the results I had in 2005 where I didnt lose anything. I lost more doing WW for 3 months than I did on Atkins for 2 months in 2005.

Can anyone shed some light on what I may be doing wrong. Any help I can get would be greatful. I really want to give this a try. I like the foods I get to eat on this diet.

Re: Discouraged why am I not losing anything?

Your diet looks similar to mine when I started doing it earlier. I didn't get really good losses at times and it usually pointed to me not exercising. It's very hard for me to stick with an exercise but I found a gym that has an indoor pool and I have been swimming. I have found that is the one thing I can stick with and have been doing that for about a month now. I don't really understand your experience in 2005 other than muscle gain. I know the Body For Life thing and you do a lot of weight training and muscle is so much more dense than fat. But, given that, you should have seen something on your measurments.

That was just my little bit but I am going to let some of the more seasoned people chime in. I just know from my experience if you do something like walking or swimming, nothing even too vigorous, can really be a key. When I walk, I only walk 15 minutes at a time because I get tired quick and it is so boring to me right now. But if you manage 15 minutes 4 times a day @ 2 mph (which is kinda slow) that is an hour of exercise and 2 miles!

Re: Discouraged why am I not losing anything?

Some say that it's hard to lose second, third, fourth times on Atkins as we did the first time. I'm back on induction for the, well, more than second time but the last time when I wanted to lose 20 pounds it came off. Not as fast as the first time but I didn't have that much to lose. DANDR also talks about slow weight loss or those that are slow to lose.

I believe that no WOE is for every BODY so do what's right for you, what makes you feel the healthiest. Low carb is what works for me.

Exercise definatly helps me lose much faster but I don't always see the losses on the scale as much as the tape measure.

Lica, you lost and that's great. Join us over at the Second Time Around forum you'll get a lot of support there as well.

I also find keeping track of my diet on FitDay.com helps and it's FREE!!

      Keep posting.

Re: Discouraged why am I not losing anything?

This time on Atkin's - I lost about 5 pounds TOTAL during induction. I'm now down over 30 - don't worry you will start to get there! It takes time and sometimes if we don't see huge results during those 1st 14 days we can get easily discouraged (especially when we read about people who lose 20+!!)

I would stick with what you are doing you may see a mini "woosh" soon and clothing will start to fit different.

What kept me going was continuing to show up on this board and post at least SOMETHING - good or bad I posted because I had to buy a belt - my family couldn't understand my thrill at that moment - but people here did. I posted because I cheated and felt like *rap..... people here understood my feelings when those around me didn't get it and would say "so what?"

If I were you I would add some more healthy meats.... chicken, goat, fish.... things like that. Even up your veggies a little bit if you can!

You can do it - it will take time - join in some of the challenges here - even doing 10 crunches a day is a workout sometimes... and then up it as you go! Report in here and you will start to feel better

Re: Discouraged why am I not losing anything?

Thanks everyone. I felt like crap writing this in the morning so I got on my stationary bike for 20 min. I feel better that I got some exercise in. I am going to stick with it and hopefully I will see some kind of loss next week. Maybe extend induction one more week till the end of the month.

I also though about the amount of veggies I was eating through the week and maybe I was eating a little too much. I kept seeing so many posts about "eat your veggies" that maybe I over ate some. So today I will be careful and measure the 3 cups.

          Thanks Lica

Good for you for exercising so early in your Atkins journey too

Remember induction is for 2 weeks, and so you have another week to go before working out whether you have high resistance to weightloss or not (from the chart in chapter 12 of DANDR).

Who knows, you might lose several pounds next week if you carry on following the rules!! Your food choices and quantities look fine to me, so you may not be doing anything 'wrong'
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

you sound really on plan. I know that the book mentions that we are all not going to burn at the same rate. Like we are all not created the same. Good Luck!

p.s. watch out for sneaky carbs in dressings. make sure you measure. The eye fools you at times. The measuring tools do not let you go beyond it.

Re: Discouraged why am I not losing anything?

Don't get discouraged! I know my first time on atkins after the 2 week induction I actually GAINED a pound. What kept me going though was that I FELT better. I had more energy, slept better, and just felt so good overall. During the 3rd week is when I finally started losing weight on the scale.

So my question for you is, how do you FEEL?

Wait out the rest of the two weeks of induction and weigh and measure yourself then. Your menu looks really good (mmm steak...) and I'm glad that you are taking your vitamins and drinking your water!

Be patient and don't lose hope. We are all here to support you

If you decide to get a copy of the book (which would be a really good decision) make sure you get hold of the Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002 edition. That's the one this board goes by as it's the last one written in its entirety by Dr A before his death, so it hasn't had other people messing around with it.

I am taking the Candex (he talks about it in the enzyme section), caprilic acid, and an oil of oregano product. I'm also taking very large doses of a very good quality probiotic based upon what he recommends.

I really seems to work but I will warn you...die-off is very uncomfortable and can make you feel like things are getting worse. Apparantly though, it is a sign that it is working.

If you can't get a book right now, go to the library and borrow one! NOW!!! LOL, I'm a 2nd timer and thought I remembered most of the basics, read the info here and throughout the web to refresh my memory. Printed out the Rules of DANDR, food lists, etc. Ordered my book and took forever to get here, so I borrowed one from the library and WOW, how much I had forgotten! LOL, I now have 2 books one at home and one at work and I feel like it just helps to refresh yourself every now and again with the true basics. Just something about reading it all together instead of piece mealing it all together seems to click better in my brain....

I too suggest fitday as a way of keeping yourself accountable and making sure your measurements are in line. Also helps you to know if your fats/proteins/carbs in a decent ratio. The suggested percentages are:
35% protein, 65% fat and 5% carb on induction. I don't stress over having "perfect" percentages, but do try to keep in a close/similar range.

I believe they also recommend fat and veggies at ea meal during induction.

Have you measured yourself??? You may be losing inches too rather than pounds and that can sometimes be a better guide for some who don't lose lbs as fast as others, but they do lose inches!

Hang in there, keep on plugging and give it some time!
