  • On the road?

I don't know if this is the right spot for this but my downfall is always when I'm on the road. I was hoping I could get some good induction based ideas for meals/snacks on the road. I'm in the car for the next two days and I hate stopping at fast food places or having beef jerkey/pepperettes as a meal. They don't feel so nice later TIA.

    Re: On the road?

Are you able to pull over for 5-10 minutes to each -- if so possibilities are endless (small tub of chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad/cold chicken) hard boiled eggs, cheese wedges [these you probably could eat and drive] Linda has some cheese crackers on her website that are quite simplet to make but taste great - just like Cheezits!

Don't forget to take plenty of water!!!

take some peanuts & beef jerkey to snack on. Make some deviled eggs and cheese slices or something. Maybe celery and cream cheese? It's really yummy together Grill some chicken and make some slices to munch on too.

Beef Jerky (read carb count it is kind of high sometimes)
Baby Bele (sp) Cheese in small packs
Pepperoni slices (buy a bag pre-sliced)

as for stopping to eat, just have a hamburger (I like wendys 99 cent ones) ask for mustard only and lettuce. Remove bun... have a small diet coke if you like.

I posted a thread with a link for cracker barrel on here. They have decent meal items.

Omelletes are a good smart choice too at any basic mom and pop place you may find with a 24 hour menu

have fun on your trip! be sure to buy lots of bottle water to take!

**** side note: watch out for the nuts and driving you may forget how many you have eaten and slow your diet/stall... I usually get the ones I have to work to eat with shells... a mess... but work for it!

          Re: On the road?

I work on the road a lot. I agree it can be challenging to find something decent to eat that fits the low carb regimen, especially at the fast food outlets.

I have found that most of the larger grocery stores have a nice salad bar.
( Krogers is a chain in my area that has them. ) I stop in there, fix myself a good salad, with some pepperoni or chicken salad on top, and ranch or bleu cheese dressing. Put plenty of the shredded cheese and bacon bits on top.

I also try to remember to buy some cheese, I love it. It makes a good snack at the 3:00 p.m. hunger pain, and keeps me from getting too hungry just before dinner. Even on the road, dinner at a restaurant is usually not a problem. Most have decent salads, some veggies, ( brocolli and cheese, spinach, cauliflower, etc. ) and steak, roasted chicken, prime rib etc. on the menus. Take the extra 30 minutes for a real meal when on the road. It pays off in the long run.

One caution, I don't know how you do at the buffet style places. A lot of us have issues with them. Instead of concentrating on all the good things we can have, we indulge in the mac and cheese, baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, etc. I have found that eating off a menu works better for me. It limits me to the items I should have, and also controls the portion size.

            Re: On the road?

When I'm on the road for work, I make sure I get an efficiency suite, with at least a microwave & fridge. I head out to the supermarket, and buy a few small trays of food, vegie tray (assorted vegies & dip), fruit tray, sometimes a small cheese tray, these are all great for brkfst & lunches. I always have something small in the fridge. Sometimes I bring a little cooler from home with various items to munch on as well, eggs, tuna salad, sliced meat. Dinner I usually eat out, buffets are great, as I can pick and choose, vegies, meats, fish, chicken. I'm just very selective. Eating out with proper planning, can be very easy!

I too am on the road a lot. I also hit the local grocery stores for items like hard boiled eggs, salads, sliced deli meats. It can be a little more difficult, but it can be done.

You could also make some bacon and keep it in a baggie for snacking in the car. Easy to eat on the go!

                  Re: On the road?

Oooo bummer! Roading it is tough. I would invest in one of those small powered car coolers - the kind you can plug into the lighter. That way you could more effectively bring healthy stuff that has to be kept cool. Everything else is going to be full of preservatives ack.

Beef jerky you find at gas stations is full of carbs. Watch that stuff. I was going to do jerky for a while til I saw even the plain kind was packed with carbs

                  • Use of vitamins and whey protein isolate

                      Re: On the road?

I would second mystic's suggestion of getting one of those car powered coolers that plug into the lighter socket. We have a couple of these - one small (would take 6 cans of coke) and one larger one about 4 times as big - and find them invaluable when on the road and not able to rely on finding the right sort of food.
For long trips we always take the mains adaptor so we can plug in at the hotel too.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
