Hey all, just had a rather embarrasing question for you guys or ladies too. I have been on Atkins since August and have went from 228 to 175 as of this past week. I love the diet and have had great success with it. I am lucky that I excersise daily and my body reacts well the diet. My wife and I are on it and I see that I can eat more things and get away with little to no stalling from it. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Well after moving through the rungs I have been eating more of the Atkins/Southbeach bars with peanut butter added or some sugar free shelf stuff (not the best i know) with all little to no NET CARB readings but stuff does have some sugar alcohols in them. Well is this whats causing my very stinky gas ALL THE TIME? It's ridiculous lately. I am still losing about 1-2 pounds per week. I am also excersising a lot more than I was at the beginning so I don't know if the SA's are affecting me or passing through me??

Re: Very stinky gas when eating after losing 55 pounds??
The fake sugars can slow down and even stop my weight loss (when I eat too many.) If you're continuing to lose weight and can live with the gas I guess you're okay with them. I'd be curious to see if you replace them with a more natural snack if your weight loss would increase. I really don't think having gas affects weight loss, it's just the body struggling to digest them.
PS. You might want to check with your better half, can she live with it?

Usuall these products will have a warning on hem about the laxitive effects also which are caused by the sugar alcohols. it's common. I'd cut back on them actually, I don't think it's a good idea to become dependant on processed foods, you're better to stick with natural foods and snacks! and the mroe rungs you move up..the more variety you can have.Jen, 39, F

They say that the more gas they give you the "better" (for want of a better word) for weight loss. I wouldn't overdo them though. Better to stick to natural foods except in emergencies. Before and after:

Re: Very stinky gas when eating after losing 55 pounds??
What is in the bars? Are all the ingredients 'legal' for the phase of Atkins you are following?
I imagine a bar called 'granola' will have grains in it so would not be 'legal' till the last rung of OWL!
BTW many people count all the sugar alcohol carbs if they have no 'bathroom' effects (laxative) from them.Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Very stinky gas when eating after losing 55 pounds??
For me, overdoing it would be to eat them regularly as a normal part of my diet. Not overdoing it would be eating them when in a difficult situation, where you have little or no other choice, or as an occasional treat...Originally posted by edesros168What do you all consider overdoing?? I have at least 1 southbeach gronola bar a day. Usually one other item so probably about 20-30 Grams or so sugar alcohol which translates into 5-8 net if you believe that??
That's just my take... many might see it differently. Before and after:

Re: Very stinky gas when eating after losing 55 pounds??
Look at the serving size on the package, if it's 'one bar' as one serving, than i'd say anything over that will cause you issues (for many just one bar will depending on how much sa's are in them). Some have far more than others.
I know with hersheys s/f chcolates the serving size is only 3. And a serving of s/f icecream is usually only half a cup.
As elizellen said it's unlikely if you have only recently started that these bars are legal for the stage you are at.....
I just checked their site...
Not only do these bars have ingredients that you should only have in the very high rungs (in bold), but the contain several types of sugar! Not just sugar alcohols but actual sugar (in Red)!
I'd stay away all together to be honest:
Ingredients: ROASTED PEANUTS, WHOLE GRAIN ROLLED OATS, SOY PROTEIN CRISP (SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, TAPIOCA STARCH, SALT), ROASTED ALMONDS, HIGH MALTOSE CORN SYRUP, EVAPORATED CANE JUICE INVERT SYRUP, SUGAR, FRACTIONATED PALM KERNEL OIL, MULTIGRAIN CRISP (WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT FLOUR, DEGERMED YELLOW CORN MEAL, WHOLE GRAIN OAT FLOUR, SALT), MALTITOL SYRUP, WHEAT FLAKES (WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT, SUGAR, SALT, BARLEY MALT), NONFAT MILK, OLIGOFRUCTOSE (FOR FIBER), CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF NATURAL FLAVOR, MILK PROTEIN ISOLATE, NONFAT YOGURT POWDER (CULTURED NONFAT MILK), INULIN (FOR FIBER), GLYCERIN, BROWN RICE SYRUP, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, SALT, MALTODEXTRIN, CALCIUM CASEINATE, DEXTROSE, CREAM, BUTTER (CREAM, SALT), PALM OIL, SOY LECITHIN, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, HIGH OLEIC SUNFLOWER OIL, CARRAGEENAN, ERYTHRITOL, CARAMEL COLOR, MIXED TOCOPHEROLS (PRESERVATIVE).
