    Hi

    I am only on day 2 of my Induction. This is the first time ive ever tried Atkins so am a little worried about a few things. I weigh 157 pounds and am 5ft 7inches. I would really like to be 135 pounds. Firstly, Im really worried im going to gain weight as what i am now eating goes against everything ive ever done and learnt. If i list what i had yesterday can someone tell me if this is ok...

    Breakfast 3 rashers of bacon with teaspoon mayo (sounds odd but i dont reallly like bacon that much)
    Lunch 3 slices of beef, 1 slice of turkey, a few cubes of chicken, 3 hard boiled eggs and a cup of lettuce
    Dinner Sirloin steak and 140g of broccoli with a 110g of cheddar cheese for nibbles!

    Oh and most importantly 8 glasses of water! I did wake up this morning with a stonking headache, is this normal?

    Sorry if im being winey i just want to make sure im doing everything right!

    You need to be eating 3 cups of vegie a day. The suggusted way is divide them to have 1 cup each meal.

    You could have more water, but it takes a little to get used to it.

    The headache could be your body detoxing

      Hi Cheri,

      Welcome to the board. It can be hard to adjust at first and to get your head around eating fat but it comes with time.

      I know it totally depends on build, but it strikes me 135lbs might be a little low for 5'7, especially if you are doing regular exercise and build a little muscle.

      I had big bad headaches on induction - that is normal.

        First of all, I know it is counter to everything you have heard about nutrition your whole life. But there is more and more evidence that the traditional high carb, low fat diet is not actually the best plan. There are many threads and studies on this topic but for now definitely definitely read Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution. This will answer questions about this topic and all your other Atkins related questions. I also recommend anything by Gary Taubes.         On this WOE, fat is your friend, don't shy away from it because you think you will gain weight. Follow the plan and you will lose weight, not gain!

        You might want to try fitday.com if you are unsure about what you are eating. I put the menu you posted into fitday, of course I had to guess a little about some things, but I got a ratio of fat: protein:carbs as 63:36:1, not bad at all I would say. You could add a few more veggies in (more wholesome ones than lettuce, too!) as you only had 8 grams of carbs for the above menu. The extra veggies might also help you feel less sceptical about the WOE! Also, I wasn't sure what kind of beef, turkey and chicken you had for lunch so I just put in normal beef, turkey and chicken. If it was lunch meat you need to check and make sure that it isn't processed with hidden sugar and other fillers. Food manufacturers can be so sneaky!

        I'm afraid the headache is normal, especially if you have given up caffeine along with the carbs. Give it a few days to let your body detox from the icky carbs and you will feel a million times better. Good luck and you can totally do it!

          Hi

          Thank you all so much for your help, i feel much better now and a bit more confident im getting it right. One thing though, which may sound silly but this morning i took a co-codamol for my headache. Is this ok? It is a mix of paracetamol and codeine.

          I have read my Atkins book up until the Induction phase, i guess there was no point reading further until im out of induction.

          How long before i test for ketosis as well? I bought the strips yesterday but dont want to test anything if its too soon as that would just be demotivating? Thanks again for you mails, i feel much much better!

            I'd advise reading on. I think it's very important to get yourself fully prepared for what is ahead, so that you know where you are headed and, even if subconsiously, are making plans for it.

            On ketosis. Don't sweat about the sticks too much. They are not 100% reliable, some people never get a colour change at all. There are lots of other signs - including headache!!! Also a metallic taste in your mouth, loss of appetite, increased energy, absense of food cravings. They are all good indicators of ketosis.

            On your menu: If you don't like bacon, don't eat bacon. It's not a critical part of the plan, and infact because it is so salty can stall some people. Watch for sugar in it, if you do eat it, find some with no sugar.

            Also bear in mind that Atkins, in spite of widespread belief to the contrary, is not a high protein diet. So watch that you are not getting too high a proportion of protein - you have a lot of meat in there. Amy guessed at what you ate in Fitday - I did it too but obviously guessed different, cos I get a ratio of 58-1-41 - which suggests not enough fat, not enough veg, too much meat - but we both get only 1% carb, which is too low!!

            My impression from looking at your food was just as it seemed when I put it in - not enough veg, too much meat/protein.

            I'd second her suggestion that you sign up there and keep tabs on your eating for a while at least, it's a radical shift in the way you eat, and not easy to get right and Fitday is an enormous help.

              I don't see why the co-codamol would hurt you but I'm certainly no expert!

              I also think that you should read on in the book- it is exciting for me to read what comes next and think about what size I might be when I'm moving through the stages!

              As for the ketostix, I didn't use them until I had gone through a week just to make sure that I wouldn't get demoralised if it was too soon but I know that some people here have tested after a few days and been positive. Of course, after that week when I did use them they did not turn pink, purple or any colour but beige! But I could feel the other signs that Kate was talking about. So again, don't put too much emphasis on the sticks.

                It takes about 2 days for your body to use up the glycogen stores in your liver before it shifts to fat burning. Could be a little longer.

                  That is really interesting about the eating too much meat. So does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get more fat? I did have quite a lot of butter on my steak and broccoli last night, mainly to make it taste better! What else do you suggest i should try for more fat on the induction?

                    You can saute your veggies or meats in olive oil, add butter to cooked foods, and your daily cheese allowance will add fat as well. Use mayo as a dip or dressing. Do you like avocado? You can eat 1/2 avocado per day (it's a "special category" food) or make some fresh guacamole--make it fresh, don't use those mixes at the store! You're allowed to eat the skin on your chicken and animal fats. Make some sausage out of ground pork.

                    Fat is calorie-dense, meaning a little goes a LONG way! Often, just a tablespoon of oil or butter is enough to "balance" your fat/carb/protein ratios.

                      I get a nice serving of fat from the olive oil I put on my salad. I have some olive oil flavoured with rosemary and peppers, it tastes great and is a way to get in some fat when I am lacking!

                        Oh great thanks, i love olive oil, salt and vinegar as my dressing anyway so thats cool! Do you know am i allowed sausages in my induction phase or burgers?

                          Burgers yes. If possible make your own, then you know what's gone into them. Otherwise check ingredients carefully.

                          Most sausages have fillers and/or sugar which are not allowed. If you can get some from a butcher that are pure pork then they are fine, otherwise be very careful about checking ingrdients.

                            Hi sorry to keep bombarding with all these questions!!! Is there really nothing else i can drink apart from water/soda water? I reckon i can keep on the atkins for a long time but its just the drinking part, there must be something i can have??
