  • Splenda beneficial or not all that good for you?

    Hi folks,

Just out of curiosity what research have you done on splenda and what negative stuff have you found out about it? on another board i have had someone post a whole bunch of negative stuff about it...

In my opinion i tend to take articles on the internet with a grain of salt as usually there is articles that speak about how bad something is about everything.... but i am curious as to thoughts about this. I will be responding to her later but don't have time to do research right now, so i was wondering if anyone else has or thoughts on this information.

I think you can take it that from a health point of view there are no benefits at all to be had from Splenda, and I'd say that quite a lot of that negative stuff is completely true. But it's still better than sugar.

IMHO if sugar was 'invented' to-day, it would never be allowed on the market, let alone be so ubiquitous in food, because it is so obviously lacking in benefit and full of dangers - any new product that affects insulin the way sugar does would be thrown out at the first hurdle.

If somehow it did get on the market, there would be hundreds of sites explaining the harm it causes and telling people to avoid it.

Ah, Kate, I wish I shared your high opinion of the powers-that-be regarding sugar. High fructose corn syrup was invented fairly recently and the "experts" still won't acknowledge the disaster this frankenfood has caused.

So have you guys done any research or heard anything specific? I am not really asking the question if it is beneficial or not, but what people have heard and what research they have seen that either counters or upholds.

I figure in our world nowadays everything will probably kill someone eventually. I agree wholeheartedly with regard to sugar. Just because it says natural doesn't mean it is better or worse than the alternatives so to speak.

Thanks for the input so far, i will probably research it over the next couple days, but i figured since many people here tend to know a lot and have done research on many things, this may be one thing they could input on.

Re: Splenda beneficial or not all that good for you?

My thinking goes like this: Sugar is a know disease causer. Not very many things worse. Artificial sweetners are at best artificial. Right now I rank Splenda as the best out there. So given the option of some sugar or some Splenda, I take a little Splenda. Though I have recently tried Stevia again and am having some success.

There is lots of "research" out that says Splenda is not at all good for you. But my experience is that Splenda is much better than Nutrisweet. I have no problems with it.

Personally, I don't think any artificial sweetner is "good" for you. In one of Dr. ATkins' other books, he wrote in a footnote that the artificial sweeteners could be useful in weaning you off added sugars, but his ultimate goal was to be added sugar and artificial sweetener free.

It works too. When I got to the berries rung first I used add some splenda to the cream to have with mixed berries. I don't any more, my palate has adapted and I don't need that extra sweetness anymore.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has listed Splenda as safe, and it's the only main artificial sweetener that they list as safe.

Here's a handy and very informative chart listing food additives and their relative safety...

Re: Splenda beneficial or not all that good for you?

I use stevia. I try to avoid splenda. Honestly, I would rather eat real sugar (or molasses or cane juice or honey) than eat splenda. I haven't used xylitol yet, but want to try it some day.

The best way to get away from sugar is to cut yourself off completely. It's only now that I don't use sweeteners that I notice the natural sweetness of things.

I have done research and I won't eat any artificial sweetners. Organic cane sugar is the best, but the way it was described to me when I was sick... sugar simply blocks the immune system, so the more you have of it, the sicker you can get. The artificial sugars can trigger disease. The carbs and the sugars can really be so bad for you. That is one of the things I love about the Atkins approach...I don't crave sugars at all.
