Re: 20 Worst Foods in America

Before I put a complete moratorium on eating out I would down some of this stuff without even thinking about the calorie/carb/sodium counts on these foods. It's truly shocking and almost embarassing that I would do that to my body.

I often hop over the border to Michigan to do some shopping when Meijer or Kroger have a good sale on and I have noticed that the price of fresh fruit and vegetables in the supermarkets cost around 1.5x more than what they do here in Canada, which makes these fast food meals cheaper than making a fresh meal in most cases for people in the U.S. It's truly sad and puts the obesity epidemic into perspective.

Whoever the next president is, I really hope they have a plan to help farmers bring cheaper fresh and healthy foods so lower income families can actually afford them and don't have to turn to this crap. It really is a shame

Jace--what's crazy is that Michigan actually has CHEAPER produce than the national average! When I still lived there, I could get amazingly fresh produce that was CHEAP. Here in MT, I'm paying 4x the price for 1/4 of the quality.

Sadie--thanks for posting that! Gosh I used to eat some of that stuff...my stomach is churning just thinking about it.

Did you notice that many of their suggestions for making the meal healthier (ditching the tortilla and rice, getting veggies instead of starchy carbs, eating protein, etc.) were very Atkins-friendly? Hmmmm...

You know, we go to Buffalo NY a few times a year to shop (but for clothes and shoes not food LOL), and we usually go to the superwalmart, next time i'm there in march I'll have to take a look at the prices. I know that convenience foods there are really chep compared to here, but i've never really checked out the fruits and veggies, that's certainly interesting!

Chicklady: the onion surprised me too..as did the turkey burger

I noticed that too! hmm steamed broccoli instead of rice? and steak to go with it? Well how about that?

I'm very surprised about everything too - chipotle especially. I used to have that at least once a month

Wow, I'm in shock! I probably haven't tried any of those foods, but I'm sure I've had something like them! If everyone knew that they were really eating in these restaurants, I think they would avoid them like the plague. It definitely makes me think differently! Holy wow!!!

Well....now I know why I'm fat? I used to eat out every day, and wondered why I gained weight even with "healthy" choices. I can't imagine what the restaurants are putting in these dishes to create such huge numbers. I could make some of that stuff at home for half of the calories, I'm sure. Yikes!
