There are varying opinions about this WOE. Here aresome links that talk about it. I am giving you links to the good and the bad that people have to say:

http://www.atkinsdietalert.org/ (Note: In this article it states to avoid high-protein diets. Keep in mind that Atkins is a high fat diet so this isn't necessarily factual)

long term u should be eating close to normal again, just without the sugar, white flour, white rice...basically the bad stuff.

if u look around (at least over here), u should be eating lots of veggies and fruit and whole wheat products...meat isnt forbidden for normal, healthy ppl (yet lol), so I cant see a problem eating like this for the rest of my life.
remember, unless you have a really low carb tolerance, u should be adding carbs and especially foods back.
im at 55 net carbs by now, eat potatoes (not loads), peas, grapes, melon....almost everything i used to eat before and i'll be adding whole wheat products back in very soon.
Date to reach goal: I don't care, as long as it happens :P

Four years later, I'm still losing my weight (I had a lot to lose) but my health indicators are better than they have ever been. Part of the beauty of Atkins is that it isn't all about Induction ... there is the OWL Ladder that returns us to a more normal pattern of eating by gradually adding foods in a manner to measure the number of carbs (CCL) that our own metabolism can tolerate and continue to get desired results.

It's a Way of Eating for Life for me!

Mirya that PCRM bunch is about as biased as anyone on the planet. If it is eating an animal they are against it.

OMG Irish you lost almost 300 lbs!!!! WOOOAA you did wonderful!

Cannot add more here since people already basically said that... I cannot see any problems with staying on healthy foods such as lots of veggies, fruits, good meats, fish etc... of course whole grains and healthy breads ( they are not cheap, but I only eat one slice of bread daily anyway). I dont eat potatoes. Unfortunately i LOVE potatoes, and thats how I got to 180 lbs to begin with. I dont eat pasta. I eat shiratake noodles instead about 2 times per month ( they are NOT noodles . And of course we dont have any sugar at home except for hummingbirds. I dont think that it is really hard for me to keep eating like that. My husband is not on Atkins, he is 175 lbs he does not need it, but he decided to eliminate sugar and white flour from his life anyway. He is glad he did.

If you are serious about eating healthily long term this way you really should read Gary Taubes book, Good Calories, Bad Calories. It will change the way you think about food and nutrition forever.

I also like to read Regina Wilshire's blog - she is great at keeping up to date with research and other happenings in the world of nutrition and the comments and debates that go with the posts are of a high standard.

I'd second what Hudson says about that PCRM site, the atkins alert one. The webmd one is only marginally better. Both are run by extreme vegans with very radical views on animal welfare, so while they talk about nutrition, there is really another agenda underlying everything they write. You need to be quite careful to look into the background of nutritional info, there is a surprising amout of food politics going on under the cover of fairly innocuous looking sites.

I agree with what the others have said here. If you do Atkins properly and move through the phases, as Dr. Atkins wanted us to do, you eat "normally". Even during OWL Phase, you can eat "normally"--that is eat fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains while you lose the weight.

Atkins gets a bad reputation because many uninformed people believe Induction Phase is the entire weight loss diet and is the entire weight maintenance diet. My goodness, if Induction was how we are supposed to eat for the majority of our weight loss and for our weight maintenance, I wouldn't have even tried Atkins!

I'm nearing the end of my Pre-Maintenance Phase and I eat "normal" food like fruits, starchy veggies like potatoes and carrots, some grains like rice and corn, and of course plenty of veggies. I don't see how anyone would think my diet is unhealthy.
