  • frozen Vegetables question

    Hey guys

I've been eating alots of Vegetables latley, this is my 6th day since i started. I was wondering if it is okay to eat Frozen vegetables?

Today, I took out a bag of frozen vegetables that contains Cauliflower, carrot and broccoli (sp?) it was 5 grams of carbs per 3/4 cup. I put about 2 cups of the vegetables in a pot with water and two cubes of chicken flavored boullion cubes thats about >1.5 carbs. Heated it up, took it out put some pepper and hot sauce on it.

I was wondering if this is an ok, acceptable meal for the induction phase. Thanks in advance for your input.

I know carrots aren't allowed on induction. you should probably check in the i14 day induction section to check for the others.

as for nutrient value frozen veggies a lot of time have more nutrients in them then their fresh counterparts due to the fact that they are picked and frozen at their peak ripeness.

Don't boil your veggies though, it strips a lot of the nutrients out of them. You should either steam or microwave them.

No carrots, but broccoli and cauliflower are fine. I don't boil either. I nuke them, stir fry or roast them with a little olive oil. Each way has a distinctly different taste. Also, bouillon has sugar and a bunch of sodium. Herb OX has sugar as the second ingredient and then dextrose and sorbitol, then corn protein, then salt and sugar are listed again. One cube has 1100 mg of sodium, so two would have your daily total plus some.

As to this question: I was wondering if this is an ok, acceptable meal for the induction phase.

Not if that is the whole meal. That's all carbs and no fat or protein. Your meal should be high fat, moderate protein and low carb. Throw some butter on the veggies and have some chicken, fish, pork or beef and you've got an awesome induction meal.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

yes frozen vegetables are allowed as long as they are frozen induction legal vegetables. They are better than canned. All I eat is frozen vegetables.

Interesting bit on loss of phyto nutrients from microwaving.

Microwaving broccoli resulted in a loss of 97%, 74% and 87% of its three major antioxidant compounds-flavonoids, sinapics and caffeoyl-quinic derivatives. In comparison, steaming broccoli resulted in a loss of only 11%, 0% and 8%, respectively, of the same antioxidants

Yeah, I actually gave my microwave away a the year before last and refuse to have one in the house. It was a huge adjustment for me but I did feel a difference pretty quickly.

We've been about 8 years without one. Did an experiment of growing plants with microwaved and non-microwaved water and the results were scary! DH still nukes his food at work cause he's too lazy to take the time to use the toaster oven. I keep telling him I'm gonna increase the life insurance on his policy

most of the nutrients were lost due to the amount of water used, same as boiling vegatables.

One obvious flaw with the study is that the researchers used far more water--about two-thirds of a cup to microwave the equivalent of one-and-a-half stalks of broccoli--than is recommended.

That alone accounts for greater losses of water-soluble nutrients. Most instructions call for just one to two tablespoons of water.

my husband got me a steamer for christmas and its probably the best thing he got me. I no longer microwave veggies or boil them. The steamer is so much healthier for me and I use it every day! I also dont cook canned vegetables if I can help it. I think that canned veggies are loaded with salt and preservatives and lack the nutritional value of frozen or fresh veggies.

oh yea and just another funny thing... my husband also get me a carpet shampooer and more pots and pans for christmas.... how romantic. Think he was trying to tell me something? Like stay home... clean, and cook?

Further Confirmation Microwave Cooking Increases Nutrient Losses

Researchers set out to determine the effects of various approaches to microwave cooking (with differences in time cooked, power used, and use of water) on various health-promoting compounds found in broccoli (glucosinolates, phenolic compounds, minerals, and vitamin C). All microwave cooking conditions decreased levels of all the health-promoting compounds studied, except for mineral levels, which remained stable.
This study used different amounts of water, cooking time, etc

When I first met my husband I told him I'd rather have a kitchen gadget then jewelry. It took him a couple of years to get the hang of it but now I get great gifts Last Christmas he gave me 200 dollars in gift certificates from bed bath and beyond. Boy did I have fun
