This doesn't really have to do with Atkins, but it a diet related issue, so I figured I would just post it here.

The office manager at work had the bypass surgery done about a year and a half ago. I think she has lost somewhere around 150 lbs, and because of the major loss, her face has become quite wrinkled.

Anyone have any suggestions to help firm up the skin on her face? She is in her 50s, but she feels that the weight loss is making her look much older.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

She needs something that will affect the collagen and elastin in her skin. The only thing I can think of is like having the laser treatments at a dermatologists office or a medispa. chemical peels would help a little bit too.

No, what did he do? *Heads to YouTube to look...*

Obviously, there are some medical things that she can do & if it is really bothersome to her that may be worthwhile. I personally think that companies have come a long way with their products and I use Beauticontrol's platinum regeneration line...I know Oil of Olay has one, as does about every other cosmetic line on the planet. Moisturizer and stuff can't deal with deep lines or sagging skin but I've seen a definite difference in the tone of my skin and the fine lines since starting to use something faithfully...

Wrinkles are caused by the separation of fat under the skin - they're kinda unavoidable as you age. The reason heavy people tend to retain a bit of a younger look is due to the fact that the more fat you have on your face, the less those separations are visible. They're there - you just can't see them. As soon as you lose the fat, your retracting skin reveals them even more.

Skin toning and face lifts don't make separations in the fat go away, Botox does :-/ If it's seriously affecting her self-esteem that could be an option, but I am in no way an advocate of that kind of stuff. Just an FYI here. People are beautiful with wrinkles as much as they are without them. However, I also believe her self-esteem is not up for judgement by anyone else but her. People have to make their choices.

Here's basically what I'm doing to average a 2-4lb loss each week:
          • Free Weights M, W, F 40 minutes
          • Cardio T, Th, S 90 minutes
          • Average Intake=1300-1400 Average Expenditure=3200
          • Low sodium (attempting - it's really tricky!)
          • Grazing Approach
          • Use of vitamins and whey protein isolate

            Re: Suggestions...

I should clarify... I'm using the word fat there in two different instances when they aren't actually the same thing... the fatty-like stuff that separates under your skin is the collagen layer. It's fatty-like tissue that helps with your skin's elasticity and continuity. Stretching your skin is just kind of an illusion to make it appear those separations are gone. Things like Botox "fill in" those separations so you don't have to stretch your skin to solve the problem (which again, is it truly a problem? your choice).

My Mom heard from "Dr. Oz" (who the heck is he?) that a wash with apple cider vinager helps with wrinkles. I haven't tried it, but my mom has and she swears it is working. She just pours some on a wash cloth and washes her face with it......

Actually I think you may be thinking of something like Restalyne? Botox doesn't 'fill in' wrinkles...it actually paralyzes the muscles to smooth out the skin. this is the reason 90% of hollywood look like robots now when they smile, they're foreheads don't move, they're eyes don't 'crinkle' i'm surprised they can move the corners of their mouths! Nicole kidman is a perfect example..i think she actually really does look like a Stepford wife now

I'm actually not against botoxing, i just think it needs to be done in moderation..not your entire face. a couple of the women at my derm. office have had it done and look fantastic.

                From Wikipedia:

Restylane is the trade name for a specific formulation of non-animal sourced hyaluronic acid. It is composed of cross-linked long chain hyaluronic acid, and is (USA) FDA approved for cosmetic injection into subdermal facial tissues.

Most commonly, it is injected under wrinkles and aging lines of the face such as the nasolabial folds, melomental folds, "crows feet" and forehead wrinkles. It may also be used for filling aging-related facial hollows and "orbital troughs" (under and around the eyes).

                www.wikipedia.org

From How stuff works (about Botox)

Botox® Cosmetic has been successfully used to treat severe glabellar (frown) lines and is approved for use in adult patients up to 65 years of age. Also a form of botulinum toxin type A, when Botox® Cosmetic is injected into the muscles surrounding the brow area for instance, those muscles can not "scrunch up" for a period of time. They are paralyzed. So the wrinkles in that area, often referred to as furrows or frown lines, temporarily go away.

Yeah it was something like that that they inject to fill in the gaps. I thought it was Botox, but you're probably correct. It wasn't anything that was paralyzing muscle, it was just filling in the gaps to make the skin appear smooth again.
