Re: Gyms are scary..
I know how you feel. But plug in some earphones and fix your eyes on some guys nice body and you will be fine !
Or try looking for someone who looks worse than you think you do, that one always cheers me up, but then I can be very evil.

I'm a 6 foot 230 lb guy and I hate the gym I feel completely rediculous exercising in front of other people male or female. That's why I built myself a home gym.Originally posted by DuchessOfDorkAnyone else shy at the gym? I hate going because I hate being looked at. Re: Gyms are scary..
I agree, but there is one benefit for me that I dont have at home. My fear of looking stupid actually helps me sometimes when it comes to working out. I actually push myself a bit harder in public for fear of looking like some fat winded beast, lol. When at home I may run for only 1 min then stop and say ok thats enough, but in public I push myself (not too hard or more than I should but just enough to actually build more stamina and do my body some good.)
Ha ha Bambina, I too focus on someone that I think looks worse than me, lol. I mean what else can ya do if your surrounded by size 2 women and super hot guys, at least there is usually one other pityful soul there besides me, lol.

Re: Gyms are scary..
I swim at the gym and I have to say it makes me feel a bit awkward but I will start working with weights next month so that will be scary. I do feel self conscious. One lucky thing for me, I am able to go in the day time and miss the big rush after 5 and in the evening.

Re: Gyms are scary..
Yeah the home gym thing wouldn't work for me.. the training regiment I'm on requires a lot of different pieces of equipment. I just hope it works so I can get hot and won't feel all weird about being surrounded by hot chicks and buff dudes.
Although yesterday I saw an old Asian lady using the weights. I felt sooo much better.Height 5'1"

Re: Gyms are scary..
I hate that people in gyms can make others so uncomfortable...I used to go to a women-only gym that had several women, in really good shape, walking around in full makeup, hair done, full spandex etc etc. Used to make me laugh though...it was a womens only gym, so basically all they got behind their backs was alot of eye rolling from us 'regular' people.
I ended up joining a city run gym that wasn't fancy..and people just worked out in sweats, cost half the price and basically had the same equipment. no personal trainers or fancy mirrors and carpeting etc.
I no longer go there now though..because the thing i hate most about the gym is having to go out in the cold and travel there! LOL i bought a treadmill at home and now do my running and weights here until the nice weather comes and i can get back outside.Jen, 39, F

Re: Gyms are scary..
well my story is a little different. i used to go to the gym....i LOVED it and went 5 days a week. i was hesitant at first but once i realized most of the people there were normal folks trying to get into or stay in shape i was fine. (the barbie group is there in the morning after school drop off...i did not go til after work.)
however....our gym changed management, became excessively dirty and that TOTALLY GROSSED ME OUT. i tried talking to the management...but nothing changed so i dropped my membership...now i use our elliptical and bowflex and weight bench at HOME....at least i know whose germs i am sharing.
i guess my point is that the GERMS were lots scarier to me than the big boys and hard bodies.

Re: Gyms are scary..
Hi All,
UGH the gym, yeah the gym. I guess i am weird lol. I use to think about how silly people look walking around trying to look good then i stopped and said wait a second, you know they have to actually do the work for most of them to look like that and ****, kudos to them, if they go to the gym to show themselves off. I try and think of it like this -- while my habit and focus up til now has been eating junk and wrong and doing things to get me out of shape, their habits and focus has somehow been creating this awesome body they have. Some may not have to do the work as hard as others , but in all reality they do have to do the work that makes them look like that just like us out of shapers have to do the work to get to where they are if we wanted too. Sometimes i think us having to start at the beginning (where most of the nice looking people at the gym are concepts of "results" of what we are doing), makes us uncomfortable. But look at the before and after photos of many people here who post. I know as i lose the weight, i will probably start overall taking better respect in my appearance, which means that i may stop and fix my hair before going, making sure my outfit is cute, throwing on some mascara or lip gloss. Why not? BTW lol i am also single and there are some damn cute guys at the gym i go too lol.
I use how these people look, their confidence, and their "posturing" lol as motivation because one day i want to be able to do the same thing -- whether i will choose to or not is another question, but i do want the option of showing off my sleek, toned bod to the other sleek toned bods lol if i choose too but more importantly, I want to show my accomplishment of working hard at this and enjoy it. grins, right now, i don't have that ability and so i do remind myself that while they may not LOOK like they are actually working out, in all reality what they represent many times are people who work at working out to get the results they do have. I just don't see how they cannot do the work and still have those results.
In this day and age when there are more overweight out of shape people, a nice, toned, healthy body is something to "see" so to speak, no? Sort of the odd people out if you ask me lol.
Yeah i know i have weird ways of seeing things lol.Take care of you!! Journey
