  • Bananas? Pure evil?

Hi everyone? I know bananas have a lot of carbs... but is there any redeeming quality to them since they are "complex" carbs or are they just as evil as a plate full of chocolate chip cookies??

I'm not talking about during induction or anything - but during the later stages of low-carb eating (as a lifestyle.)

    Thanks!

It's going to depend on the person, but once you're able to add them back (Other fruits rung I beleive) if you don't have any problems with them causing cravings etc, you can add them back. They do have a high GI rating I think, so there is a possibility that they could cause cravings, though sometimes you can offset this by eating them with a protein or fat. I can't eat apples on their own on an empty stomach, but can eat them with peanut butter...or right after a meal.

I think it's really important during OWL to find out your tolerance for your favourite fruits and veggies...this WOE is for life...

Before Atkins, bananas were about the only fruit that I ate unless it was in a pie or an ice cream flavor. I get a little banana now in an occasional fruit salad.

They do have a lot of sugar, but still way better than a dozen doughnuts. But I just don't really miss them for some reason.

Like Sadie said, bananas might be "good" for some and "bad" for others. I used to eat bananas quite often pre-Atkins, either by themselves or on cereal.

On Atkins, I've had them a few times, but only 1/2 banana at a time, and they're a food I really don't miss. I felt like they were too "expensive" for my taste--too many carbs spent on one thing! Instead, I bought banana extract, and if I want banana flavor, I use a couple of drops of that instead. Though I didn't really acquire a taste for them again, I had no problems with bananas when I do eat them.

I miss plantains, actually. I used to eat them for breakfast. Another of those cultural foods that was probably partially responsible for me being overweight..

I have always loved bananas .. but only recently (IN MAINTENANCE) started having an occasional banana when I've been out running 10 or more miles ... they are a great source of energy if you need it, but as has been mentioned, they are HIGH on the glycemic index ... LET THE CONSUMER BEWARE...

I love bannanas, unfortunately I won't be eating them any more. All tropical fruit as far as that goes because of the High GI. I'll have to stick to bannana extract.
I follow the GI (glycemic index) and GL (glycemic load) along with Atkins to control my Type 2 diabetes.

Ditto what the others have said. They're certainly better for you than a doughnut though.
If (at the correct rung of OWL) you find they don't cause you cravings or other difficulties, then go for them... in moderation of course.
