  • Is honey ok instead of sugar?

    Hi everyone,

I just wanted to ask if honey is allowed instead of sugar. I have been using honey with herbal teas and I am still losing, but if this is not allowed then I will stop. I think honey is better than artificial sweeteners. I could not find anything in the DANDR, but then again I just looked through it quickly. Anyone know anything about this?

I'm not sure where you are with Atkins, but at least in Induction and OWL (I didn't read further yet) honey it's not allowed.

I am still in Induction so honey is a no no now. Thanks a lot for your help.

Honey would be allowed when sugar is ...... and there is no sugar allowed at any of the weight loss phases of Atkins and it's something you need continued caution about on maintenance (most people at maintenace do not eat any sugar, and therefore no honey).

Honey is primarily sugar and in a form that is rapidly digested. As far as its nutritional content from a weight loss point of view is concerned, it is even more concentrated in sugar than white table sugar and is an absolute no-no.

You might try stevia for a sweetener. It's all natural and sugar free.

Stevia was the best thing that I found a few years ago. I use nothing else. I use KAL liquid stevia for my tea (never have drunk coffee) and the pure stevia powder for other cooking.

I agree... go the stevia route if you're concerned about artificial sweetners; though I have to say, I'm not a great fan of it.

Thank you all. After I was informed by you guys that Honey was not allowed I decided to eliminate it and I'm not using sweetners either. Since I can handle my Tea unsweetend now, I think I will be fine. Thank again.

Re: Is honey ok instead of sugar?

For future reference, page 230 of DANDR 2002 # 14 reads: Exclude the following items entirely: Sugar in any form, including corn syrup, honey and maple syrup. Also on the same page is the rule that you can only have 3 packs of artificial sweeteners per day and must count the carbs in them.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.
