  • For Those of You Who Remember Me!

I was on here before Easter and I was on my 2nd go round and doing really good until I was perscribed some sulfa antibiotics that made me sick. Only problem was that my doctor determined the 'sickness' was viral influenza. Uh No. I was highly allergic to the sulfa and after I started feeling better again (the day after a clean easter) She told me to start them back up again. Lovely right? Then put me into (sorry about the spelling) anafalactic shock and I was in the hospital for over a week. It was really bad I had to be ambulanced to the hospital. It was lovely. I hate hospitals and I'll bet I can't wait for the bill. And of course when your in the hospital and they tell you to eat such and such you can't request an atkins menu.

It seems like every time I get going something comes along and bites me in the butt. I'm still on Prednisone and this popular allergy medicine for the time being because the swelling from the hives made me totally unrecognizable. I'd never heard that you can swell from hives on the inside? I haven't even stepped on the scale because I know that between the prednisone and food I've eaten at the hospital have totally bucked me off the 'wagon' so to speak.

I've been given a strict diet to follow from the doctor that does not allow for my chosen way of eating and I've discussed it with them. I plan on being back on the Atkins Plan by the end of this month as soon as I get the clearance.

One last positive note they told me at the Cleveland Hospital that if I ever ingest anything with sulfa in it I could be dead before they could get me to a hospital. Pleasant huh? I wish it had just been the viral influenza. GRRR...

Sorry to hear that happen. Why did the doctor put you on a special diet? What was his reasoning?

Re: For Those of You Who Remember Me!

Honestly I have no clue. I think it had something to do with the water retention and the effect of that extra fluid on my heart since last year I had to see my family doctor about irregular heartbeats. Once I lost weight that problem went away but I'm noticing the flutterings are coming back now along with the tightness in the chest and the heavy breathing. Maybe it does have something to do with the water retention but if that is the case the Atkins plan would take care of that, especially when i get to stop taking the prednisone. I just want to get off all this medication and get back to my normal lifestyle. I miss my housework and yard work as strange as that seems. Sitting in a hospital bed for a week watching T.V. and being hooked up to machines was annoying. I just want to get back to where I feel normal again. I've noticed that I'm a bit more spacy now and have a harder time concentrating and I get tired so easily. I want my life back that I had before the Sulfa.

The eating plan is completely opposite of the Atkins plan... lots of white meats that are low in fats, low calories, fruits and veggies, whole grains, ect. I don't like it and they know it with the combination of the eating and the presnisone I feel like a water balloon. I can't wait to go back and see my family doctor and see what he says. I honestly do not know how to eat low fat anymore. Its like my mind has been reprogramed by the Atkins diet.

Anyway thanks for listening to my gripes. They tell me to take it easy but who can take it easy when there are two kids, cub scouts, housework, dog, cat, ect. As parents we do what we must and thank god that we can do it. I'm thankful for this board.

        Hi Shari-dawn,

        Of course we remember you!

Sorry to hear you have had such a tough time. That sounds scary about the sulfa - is there anything you can take after a reaction to stop the shock?

Get well soon! Hope you can get back on track asap. I totally know what you mean about not being able to eat low fat - it seems all wrong.
