  • Chocolate addict - funny approach

Just like my nick name indicates (SwissMiss) I love chocolate and living in Switzerland, imo home of the best chocolate in the world, does not make it easy being a chocolate addict on... especially since I am working on controlling this addiction. I'm back on a strict Atkins plan since a few weeks and it's going well. No real cravings, no cheating. Only occasionaly I do have what I call mental cravings for chocolate - meaning that my mind remembers me how good chocolate tastes.

Since I don't have any chocolate at home it always happens at work, as our team has a real big sweet tooth. So here's what I do, when this mental craving is really bad, just like today, I take a piece of paper wrapped chocolate and smell it.. almost sniff it for a few times and then put it away and don't eat it. As funny as it looks when I do it... it actually works. Smelling chocolate helps me satisfy my mind and it boosts my selfastem for not cheating.

Thought I need to share this funny, crazy approach with you

I smell things all the time at work since there always seems to be something around to tempt me...my co-workers make fun of me for doing it but it really helps.

I agree... smelling stuff can be almost as good if a craving hits.
Swiss Miss, can you get decent sugar free chocolate over there?
Edited to add: well duh... it's Switzerland! You must be able to get it!!

if you can control your portions Lindt makes an extra dark (85% cocoa) chocolate bar that is only 2.5 carbs for two squares or 5 carbs per serving. It is NOT sugar free but low in sugar. VERY dark and deep. less sweet than semi sweet. Hits the spot esp for TOM.

I have not tried the smelling thing. I just may do that. Although I can't eat chocolate anyway. It gives me horrible headaches. Which stinks. I guess in this WOE it is good that I don't have a chocolate addiction. Mine is more like PEEPS!!! OMG!!! Just typing that makes me want a package. Anyway, I am going to try the smelling thing. Sounds interesting.

I don't think I could just smell chocolate - because then I'd have to buy it and I'd definately eat it!

A word of caution on the low sugar or sugar-free chocolate - I used to be fine with it and with cocoa powder legal desserts and stuff but slowly but surely a total re-addiction emerged and has made this WOL very hard for the past few months. I'm not saying everyone will be like me, but be careful! If you can kick an attachement to something like chocolate early on and for good, it will make the going much easier later. Just my opinion though, I'm sure some folks would be fine
