  • New diagnosis-seems I'm "carb intolerant"

Well, went to my allergist for testing and was told I had an intolerance for carbs, grains especially. Celiac test and allergy tests were all negative, but yet I had health troubles. Made a lot of sense though. (Honestly, I thought for sure I was celiac)

My body doesn't digest these properly which has been creating a lot of health troubles including high blood pressure. Seems it's the lack of enzymes being produced, but according to my allergist the pill form of enzymes they have right now aren't adequate enough. Soo, looks like it's back to being really strick for me as it's now started to effect my breathing a bit. And I really LIKE breathing. lol. It's a bad habit, I know, but one I'm not giving up anytime soon. So, it's gone from this way of eating being a choice, to this way of eating being a have too. My allergist says it will only get worse with age, YIKES, but the no grain diet helps.

    Anyone else dealing with this?

Thank you. It has indeed been a while.
My computer decided to go sizzle, snap, crackle on me, so I spent quite a while offline.

      Anyhow, back up and running.

Looks like next month I go back the way I came. LOL. Back to the veggies and the like. At least now I know what the problem was.

Any clue when another bootcamp will be up and running? I think I need a refresher. LOL. (but don't we all at one time or another)

Rats, that's unfortunate. I'll just have to wait and hope another rolls around sometime soon.

Anyways, good to see you again.

            Aloha,
How did you get tested? Is this a blood test or a skin test? I'm curious. Do you recommend it to others?

Welcome back! You must have known that this WOE was right for you.

Re: New diagnosis-seems I'm "carb intolerant"

Aloha & good morning. (well, at least it's morning here in VA 9:47am) lol

Actually, I noticed when I was on Atkins my leg and finger numbness started to leave. For diabetics, which I am, they call it neuropathy. And also on wheat I would wake up with my a hand or hands sometimes painfully numb, or tingling, but it went away when I'd move them. (I later found out that was a symptom of carb intolerance)

Then I also vomited up grease when I ate wheat as if my body was not digesting it, BUT...on Atkins, I had little trouble with grease/fat in food. Atkins controled my, then, hypoglycemia (wasn't prediabetic then). I no longer woke up stuffy on Atkins, no congestion. Off Atkins it was bad enough that it was effecting my breathing and I'd have to use my inhailer sometimes after eating wheat, usually 10-20 min after. And when I tried Atkins, for the first time my eczema of 30 years (since baby hood) went away and left. I wish I'd known that 30 some years ago. Now I have only minor break outs once in a blue moon if any.

A friend had suggested I look into the symptoms of Celiac Sprue Disease which is a gluten intolerance. When I looked at the websites, I printed out a page of the symptoms and then highlighted what symptoms from the list I was having.

I lived with these symptoms for years, but didn't finally ask my Dr. for allergy testing until it started to really effect my breathing, as I've had allergies all my life of some sort. She then ordered a celiac test as well as allergy testing.

I thought for sure it was celiac, yet my test came back negative (and let me tell ya I had a lot of celiac symptoms). The allergy test was negative too, except for one small allergy. I also took my list of symptoms to the allergist.

He said he's seen this before in many people and that wheat, and grains in general, are one of the most problem foods to the general population. He said the human body isn't meant to digest these. Anyways, that's when he told me I couldn't digest them well either. My body wasn't making enough enzymes, which explains the fact that when I eat an acidy food like vinager, that I did much better after eating wheat. Acid helped to break down the food.

So, after my diagnosis I googled symptoms for carb intolerace. A lot of the symptoms I was having were listed there also. Anyways, thanks to Atkins I finally found the way I need to eat.

              Sorry for the novelette. LOL.

you should have asked your allergist when he said you were "carb" intolerant if that meant you couldn't eat veggies and fruits too because they also contain "carbs".

They say that 1 in 300 Americans have celiac disease. But since the symptoms range from minor (skin rashes) to severe (diarrhea, weight loss, etc.) it isn't diagnosed as frequently.

I don't have celiac disease according to the tests, but I do have a problem with wheat (makes me wheeze). So I avoid wheat, but eat grains like oats, rice, corn, and barley.

By the way, if you do have celiac disease, then you have to avoid gluten. However, some grains, like rice, do not contain gluten. So you will be able to eat that during the Grains Rung of OWL and Pre-Maintenance.

I asked my allergist if it would help if I stayed off grains, he said "yes". And he said keep doing what I was doing on Atkins. LOL. Veggies that are low glycemic don't bother me, it's the grains that make me throw up fats, break out, etc. I do very well and get better while I eat like the induction says to.

Well, you see, that's the kicker...not only is it wheat that effects me, but other grains as well. Certain brands of rice will give me a bad headache, but yet...I can use minute rice in moderation, but sometimes that causes wheezing.

I can't handle oats either, messes me up. I really get bad when I try whole wheat. I can, however, handle soy flour well, almond flour, flax seed flour, (of course all not considered grains. LOL)

I don't have the weightloss associated with celiac, but some do have weight gain. I don't, however, have any blood in the stool which is also common in celiac at times.
