Re: How long is too long for Induction?

In chapter 13, Dr. Atkins references the BMI (Body-Mass-Index) chart to define "overweight".

Based on these figures, the federal government has announced guidelines that create a new definition of a healthy weight—a BMI of up to 24.9. A BMI of 25 or above is considered overweight. If your BMI is 26 or 27, are approximately twenty percent overweight.
To further what Dr. Atkins wrote in the book a BMI of 30 or greater is considered obese according to federal standards.

If you look at the BMI chart in the Chapter 13, a person weighing 220 pounds and is 6 feet tall has a BMI over 30, making that person "obese". While a person who is 6 feet tall and weighs 175 has a BMI below 24.9 (upper limit normal weight.) It's a difference of 45 pounds.

Also in chapter 13, Dr. Atkins calls a 20-30 pound weight loss goal a "modest weight loss goal". We have folks here who have this "modest" goal and we have folks with a slightly more ambitious goal of 50-70 pounds, as well as folks who have goals of more than 70 pounds.

      And also in chapter 13

If you are metabolically resistant to weight loss, which you will know by how much weight you have lost in the first two week and by comparing your results with the categories in the metabolic resistance tables on page 158, you will lose weight relatively slowly. People with high metabolic resistance can benefit from doing Induction longer because it gives them time to correct metabolic imbalances they have developed over time. These include insulin resistance, blood-sugar imbalances, carbohydrate addictions and allergies. Once the metabolic imbalances are corrected, weight loss may speed up.
And the last sentence in Chapter 13
People with high metabolic resistance can benefit from doing Induction longer than two weeks because it gives them time to correct metabolic imbalances they may have developed over time.
Based on what Dr. Atkins wrote in Chapter 13, it isn’t responsible to tell folks, "Congrats on your 12 pound loss during Induction. But since you have a 70 pound goal (that’s a lot of weight!), you really should stay on Induction until you get most of your weight off. Then you should move to OWL."

I have just finished 3 1/2 weeks of induction and I am now moving onto OWL starting with the vegetable rung.

In my opinion I think its a wise idea to move onto the next phase so one can get used eating for the rest of their lives not just temporary. Induction Phase is temporary to get your body started.
          Good luck!

Would it in any way be advisable to move into OWL with 40 pounds to go?
I'm considering moving directly into OWL after 14 days of induction this time around, but I am rather metabolic resistant and I wonder if 40 pounds (what I think I will have to go after induction) is too much for the later phases?

First time I did Atkins, I lost around 75 pounds, but stayed on induction almost a year to do this! As some of you mentioned in this thread I got bored and felt restricted and ended op quitting and gained almost all of it back! I don't wanna risk the same this time around, I wanna do it right and go through all the phases....I'm not in a hurry to loose weight, but I don't want to do too much stalling either!
            Any advice?

Re: How long is too long for Induction?

Hi Elmark Welcome back to your ADBB family!!

I would suggest moving to OWL rung one straight after your first 14 days on induction to make sure you avoid the situation you had last time.

Doing OWL while you are still in a healthy weightloss mode will allow you to more easily judge whether adding carbs is slowing your weightloss or the new foods are affecting your body so you might find it easier to establish your CCLL this time,
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                Hi Elizellen
I'm glad to be back....and it's great to see, that you still look fabulous!!!

I'm 5 days into induction now and I think you're right, that maybe I should only stay here for 2 weeks. I have just never tried anything else than induction, so OWL and the other phases will be brand new world stuff for me....but I can't wait to have cottage cheese and some milk ;-) So maybe it's the right choise!

Thanks for handing out great advice as always!

Re: How long is too long for Induction?

I stayed on Induction for a long time, but when I came here, I had lots to lose. In DANDR 2002, Dr. Atkins has a chapter devoted to when it is time to move from Induction. I answered all the questions, wasn't bored with my choices, was feeling well, doctors agreed that I wasn't starving myself to death and my the Atkins plan was working for me. About a year in, I began increasing veggies and starting OWL. It was a matter for me of learning to eat and maintain this lifestyle for the rest of my life.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

IrishIrish I remember you very well from my first time around in 2004!
Maybe when I move into OWL it would be an idea for me to stay a little longer on each rung....like maybe a month or so? Would that keep the weight loss going for a little longer? That way I would feel like I'm moving on but still be able to loose some weight?

Elizellen....the STAC is a little misleading....(Second time LOL) but I guess my 2 last tries haven't been all that prepared!!! I'll go have a look!

Finish your 14 Day Induction then see what the metabolic resistance charts in Chapter 13 say about your degree of metabolic resistance. IF you have an average to low degree of resistance, then moving to OWL would be a good idea.

What I've found is that many people don't bother to look up their metabolic resistance in the charts and think that losing "only" 12 pounds means they have a high metabolic resistance. So on Day 14 see what the charts say about you.

The other thing is that since you know you got bored with Induction, you may want to move over to OWL. OWL allows you to eat a wider variety of food while you lose weight.

Megs.....thanks for your input....I'll wait the 14 days and see....I started at 98,9 kilos and after one week I'm down to 96,2.....that's 2,7 kilos in one week....no matter if I loose or not in week 2, I will have lost around the 10% of total overweight....if you count all the water weight I have already shed some of! (I had elephant legs.....now I'm down to hippo-size....LOL)
