  • Starting Atkins...But Should I Do Induction?

    Hi everyone,
I am new to the boards and would be greatly appreciative of any advice you may be willing to share with regard to my particular situation.

I returned to a low carb lifestyle nearly 7 weeks ago using the Lindora Lean for Life program. For those who are not familiar with it, Lean for Life is a low fat, low carb plan (quite the opposite of Atkins). I've lost 19.2 pounds since I began, but around the fifth week, discovered that I was craving fats desperately, and had to begin modifying the plan to make it more sustainable by adding some additional fats in. It was around this point that I became more interested in the Atkins way of life.

I obtained and read both the 1972 and 2002 Atkins books cover to cover (twice!) and am definitely interested in making a full conversion from Lean for Life to Atkins. That being said, I'm not sure whether I need to begin with Induction, or should just pick up where I am, so to speak.

As of today, I have been in ketosis for six and a half weeks. I am keeping my carbs at 50g a day or less (note, that is not net carbs, but total carbs, as that is what we count on the Lean for Life program). I am also eating a range of foods: fruits, veggies, proteins, nuts, etc. already and have begun to increase my fats through the use of mayo, butter, etc.

So what do you recommend? Start from the beginning with Induction, or pick up somewhere else?

Thanks in advance for any and all thoughts you experienced ADBB folks may have on my situation.

    Jen

I'm sure the more experienced members will give you great advice. But in my humble opinion I would start from the very beginning. Dr. Atkins WOL is very specific and if you truly want to be living the Dr. Atkins' way of life you should try and do it from begining to end, at least that's what I would do.

More experienced users...what do you think?

      Hi Jen! Welcome!

My thoughts are that I'd go by the book and complete Induction and move on through the OWL (Ongoing Weight Loss) rungs. That way, you'd feel that you'd given Atkins and yourself a fair shake.

      Sure do wish you well!

Thanks so much Irish Mom and Creek for the ultra-fast responses! (And thanks for the warm welcome, as well!) I am actually inclined to start from the very beginning, myself, but am definitely interested in any and all advice and perspectives, so please keep it coming!

        Thanks again!

          Hi Jen
          Welcome to our ADBB family

I too think you might be better to start with induction for 14 days then move on up the OWL ladder. This will help you find your CCLL and any foods that affect you.

However as you have already been lowcarbing you might find an initial increase in weight as your body adjusts to this WOE rather than the 'woosh' of water weightloss many newcomers experience.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

I agree with above posters I'd start with induction and after 14 days move to OWL.
