So - I've been on Atkins for 8 weeks now. Everything is going well, slower then I'd like - but I'm progressing and that's good. Anyway, this evening I went to a birthday party where they served hotdogs and hamburgers. I had two hamburger patties and the strangest thing happened... My lips started feeling itchy, and they're still feeling that way. I think it was because whatever seasoning they had put in the burgers had something in it that I haven't eaten in weeks! Later I asked what seasons were used and he showed me the jar... there was wheat, and a bunch of stuff that "Atkineers" aren't supposed to eat in the ingredient list...

Has the itchy feeling happened to anyone here after not having eaten something for quite some time?

I've never felt itchy...I just feel sick when I eat something I'm not supposed to! Don't know if others have felt this so maybe it is normal but maybe there was something else that you were allergic to in the burgers? Or maybe there was some type of pepper in the seasoning? My lips burn after eating peppers but maybe there was a mild pepper that just made your lips tingle?

I find that if I've been eating properly for a few weeks and then eat carbs like a hamburger with bun and a soft drink ,I['m instantly sleepy and have to take a nap. When eating the protein and veggie carbs I don't have this problem.

I would pay attention to the 'itchy' feeling after eating something. A food allergy can happen even when you've been eating that food without interruption.

I have a slight allergy with eggs, and a very serious allergy to hops (can't drink beer or cheap wine coolers). I've always loved almonds, and I was eating them on a daily basis several weeks ago, when I noticed that burning and itchy feeling after eating three pieces. I thought "how odd" and I didn't have almonds for about a week. Then, to test if I had developed an allergy to almonds, I had one piece (from a different can) and yep....the burning and itchy feeling was back and even my throat felt itchy.

If it's at all possible, I'd try to pin down exactly what caused the reaction.

I agree with Creek. If you have developed an allergy to something, it could get worse if you keep eating it, even unknowingly.

The beauty of following Atkins is that it makes it easier to isolate problem foods as long as you pay attention to your body.

It is possible you have an intolerance to some ingredient which in the past your body tolerated as it had got used to constant inputs of it. Now you have 'detoxed' from whatever it is you have the chance to discover which ingredient you need to avoid.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Wow, I've never experienced something such as that yet. Perhaps I will and now at least I will know what it is. Stay strong. God Bless, Joe

                Re: Food Reaction

I haven't had any itchy symptoms, but Atkins has absolutely opened my eyes to my food allergies.

I cannot tolerate the following food groups (and individual foods):
Dairy: I'll bloat and get cravings like mad. When i say bloat, I can eat dairy and gain 3-4 lbs of water weight overnight. I get crazy thoughts too. I get irritable, cranky, and just plain mad at stuff that just doesn't make sense.

Grains, particularly wheat: I'll bloat to the turn of 5-7 lbs whenever I eat anything with gluten in it. I don't get too many cravings, but I do get the bad attitude.

Nuts, no bloating or gain, but I turn into a craving LUNATIC wanting to eat anything and everything in sight.

So, don't discount anything you are eating that makes you feel funny. Do just like you are doing, eliminate the food, get those feelings gone and then very slowly add the food back. If you start having those symptoms again, you know the food is causing it.

I haven't had anything that wasn't legal this time. When I strayed on this WOE the first time (in 2004) I got majorly sick. I had a horrible headache, felt sick and wanted to sleep for days. That feeling was the worst.

                    Re: Food Reaction

By doing Atkins by the book, I discovered that I am allergic to wheat and most grains. Now, when I get something with grain in it, I bloat and my skin feels tingly. I also get terrible brain fog and it feels like my brain is swollen. Pay very close attention to what food contains before eating it.
