      Re: The Miracle Berry

It sounds intriguing, thanks for the heads-up!

BTW if anyone misses the broadcast at the link labarum posted you will probably be able to pick it up during the next 7 days here
      http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml

Look for the programme by name - they are listed alphabetically but ignoring any 'the' in the title so you will need to look at the 'M's for 'The Miracle Berry'

They are usually available on 'listen again' an hour or so after broadcast and you can either listen then or download to listen later

        Re: The Miracle Berry

        I listened to the BBC.

The product was about to be launched in the 70s but seems to have been nobbled in the USA by the sugar and artificial sweeteners lobby.

The radio programme takes the story little further than the web article.

Another attempt to launch a product based on the protein in the berry is under way.

          Re: The Miracle Berry

I had never heard of that particular berry, but there are certain herbs (the name escapes me right now) that do the same thing. I did notice that heat renders it useless, so it couldn't be used to sweeten baked goods or coffee.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

              Re: The Miracle Berry

the politics behind this goes along the same lines as stevia, which in Canada and the US is only allowed to be sold as a suppliment, and not a sweetener because of the sugar/sweetener industry .

I just wonder though..does it only make sour foods sweet? or does it make all foods (unheated foods) sweet?

Well it said it made white wine "sickly sweet" aand white wine isn't sour.

I wrote an article about stevia about 15 years ago for the now-defunct Elm Street magazine in Toronto. I was in London Drugs yesterday and saw with surprise that they are selling stevia with splenda, etc., in their diabetic section, and there is reference to the sweetening effect on the box, so maybe they've finally changed the rules.
