  • Vinegar's exact carb content

hi guys, i have an interesting question. Does anyone know how many net carbs regular distilled vinegar have? I went to the atkins site and checked for its net carb content at the carb counter area and it says 0, and so says the nutrition facts in the back of the label on the bottle. My main concern is the suggested serving portion for it is 1 TBSP. soooo lets say I'm making something, but my main ingredient is vinegar lets say 1/2 a cup, does the net carb change? or would it still be ZERO? hope someone can shed light to my inquiry. thanks!

    Aloha,
I can't answer the question but I'm really curious about how you could eat something that would use 1/2 cup for one serving. My guess is that the carb count would be the last thing to worry about

      Aloha back atcha HulaMom ,

To answer your curiousity, im trying to make a Filipino dish called Paksiw, its basically white fish boiled in vinegar. well its a ratio of 2 parts vinegar and 1 part water to be exact. vinegar is basically its main component. thats why im asking if vinegar has any net carb when consumed in large doses, if someone can confirm that its net carb would still be zero, then it would officially be an atkins friendly recipe that I can make....and share, if you're not put off by alot of vinegar.

Distilled white vinegar does have very very VERY minute traces of natural sugar. You'd actually have to consume a whole cup of the stuff to reach 0.1g of carbs. So unless you're chugging it for kicks, you should be fine

Jace, thanks again for the rescue. That confirms my vinegar question. well here's the recipe for those brave enough to try it . its really good, i guess people could compare it to pickled herring, without the fishy smell.

          PAKSIW
1.5 lbs White Fish, cut into sections
          1 1/2 c. white distilled vinegar (0.15???)
          3/4 c water
3 inch piece ginger sliced and bruised(3.1)
          10-12 whole peppercorns bruised(2.4)
          2 cloves garlic bruised(2)

arrange fish at the bottom of a non reactive pot. insert the aromatics in the crevices between the fish. pour in the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil. Turn down the heat once it reaches boiling, then simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. Adding veggies would be at this point if you want to. we normally put eggplant(1.5 / .5cups). add the eggplant bring back to a boil for about 10 min or until its limp. serve hot.
*this sounds gross or even insane, but the liquid produced at the end of cooking time is sooo good, i know y'all are puckering up already!!!

7.7 net carbs for the whole recipe
serves 4 @ +or- 2 net carbs (this is w/o veggies, just simply add the amount of veggies added to the total net carb per serving)
