  • Net carb count calculations

Im hoping some of you out there may be able to help me.

I was wondering how the atkins nutritionals comes up with the net gram counts on the protein bars, its something about the effects of the ingredients on the blood sugar I believe. these numbers dont add up to the count they claim as 2 grams

I want to try to use this method to calculate on more natural foods if possible.

I started the diet back in march after having a gout attack, realized i had to many of the risk factors, so I quit drinking alcohol and went on the diet. I have lost 27 lbs so far, but unfortunately the gout has gotten worse and at this point doesnt completely go away now.

I need to add alot of high carb fruits to my diet at least temporarily to drive the uric acid crystals in my body to disolve, I prefer to do this naturally if possible as taking drugs for the rest of my life isnt a pleasent choice for me.

I dont believe atkins is to blame for my condition, but it probably help a little with the fast weight loss as a possible trigger for the reoccurance by freeing up trapped crystals in my fat. strawberries, cherries and apples are recommended but they are a real low carb diet killer in large quanities. any help anyone could give me will be greatly appreciated.

They subtract the sugar alcohols and chemical additives like glyercin, polydextrose, etc.

For the foods that don't contain artificial sweeteners, bulking agents, non-nutritive bulking agents, etc., you subtract the fiber grams from the total carbs to get net carbs---which is what you're supposed to be doing on all the natural foods you eat during Atkins anyway.

I think in the book it says if you have gout you can still do the diet, however, you need to be under medical supervision when you do and you need to make sure you are eating the proper amounts of vegetables daily and the proper amount of protein.

If you've been on since March, then you should have moved up to the OWL phase by now. So you should have been eating the 3 cups of Induction veggies PLUS 5 net carbs more of any of the Induction vegetables. By the way, some vegetables like spinach aren't recommended for gout sufferers, so that's another reason why folks with gout who want to do any diet need to be medically supervised.

Strawberries are relatively low carb and are a part of Atkins. Apples and cherries are slightly higher carb, but are still a part of Atkins---Atkins OWL Phase, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance phases.

I looked up the strawberry/cherry cure on this website:
    http://www.health911.com/remedies/rem_gout.htm

It recommends apple cider vinegar (2 tablespoons) or 1 cup strawberries with each meal or 6-8 cherries a day.

1 cherry has about 1 net carb
1 cup strawberries have about 8 net carbs.

You might want to see a doctor, regardless of these "natural cures".

      Re: Net carb count calculations

Thanks for all the info not2late.

thats how I was figuring the net carbs in natural fruits and vegetables, just didnt know if there was anything besides deducting the fiber to lower the carb count a little more.

Im not sure exactly what phase im on with the diet, I have added quite a lot more fruit than I wanted to trying to beat down the gout symptoms, because the gout medications arent working properly for me. the inflamation doesnt go away completely and the gout has reoccured 4 times in last 2 months.

im usually in in the 30 carb range. but adding all the fruits its as high as 60.
the doctor has directed me away from certain vegetables I had added, while low in carbs they apparently are possible gout triggering foods. unfortunately I may need to pause my weight loss efforts for a few weeks and eat all the high carb fruits and other anti gout foods and remedies until I get the gout controlled and im pain free completely. then I can start fresh and see what happens. and it would have been so much easier to do this if cherries were in season, fresh cherries are apparently the best way to go. thanks again that web page had alot of well described info.
