  • I am a bit cross

I am new to the board and would just like to share with you my annoyance.

I suffer from arthritis which has got progressivly worse over the last couple of years. My doctor has given me pain killers and told me if I lost weight it would be easier for me.

Now this is when my annoyance comes in. I finally met a doctor who said that although I was really too young he would operate and give me some new knees, he went on to say that I would need to lose 10% of my body weight before he would do the operation.

I tried to lose weight. Low calorie, Low fat, NOTHING. I have a border line thyroid problem I am told so losing weight WILL BE HARD

I was given an appointment to see a doctor who helps people to lose weight. He told me that I would not eat again until I had lost all the weight needed instead I would drink special shakes coming in all wonderful flavours, chicken, banana, strawberry and chocolate and it would cost me £35 per week to buy the powder to make the shakes

Knowing this way of losing weight was going to mess up my already messed up metabolism I walked away in disgust.

My doctor then suggested a tablet which removed the fat from my system, so after each meal I had to take a little blue capsule and any 33% of fat in my meal who whoosh out. God help me if I ate a little too much fat. In the end I would not take the capsule if I suspected that the whoosh would be too dramatic

Then I took out my little orange book by Dr Atkins and like flippin magic I have already lost 14lbs in a month. I am walking better and feel great, I haven't felt this well for ages.

When I go back to the doctor I know she will say something negative about the Atkins Approach, well friends I am ready with all guns blazing to tell her that if I had stayed with her approach I would still be an unhappy very fat lady with no chance of new knees. Now I am on the way and I just want to say thank you thank you it feels marvelous to be in control at long last with no capsules or silly diets.

Wishing you the best of luck. Don't know your exact situation but I also suffer arthritis and miniscule tears in both knees. Was told there was not much they could do for me except knee replacement when older. I got them to prescribe Celebrex and it is really helping. Now with theaid of a hinged knee brace I am doing modified jazzerciseand the pounds are coming off. One knee is already improved to where a knee op does not look so necessary, although I still have the arthritis. The other knee is improving. I think the excercise is strenthening the musclesa, and the celebrex is reducing the pain, so I am getting through. Most important though is that the weight loss is greeatly improving the strain on both knees. I was told that for every pound you lose, you also remove 4-5 pounds of strain from your joints.!

LosetoCruise and OzLover, thank you so much for your good wishes. I will mention celebrex to my doctor. No wonder I am walking better all that is 56lbs of strain removed from my poor old not so nobbley knees.

The difference is just amazing I am walking without the hobble and for longer God bless Atkins.

Re: I am a bit cross

Congrats! You know my mom has been on Atkins for the last few years (she's in maintenance). Before she started she thought a lot of things she was going through was due to her getting older, she had acne, sleep apnia, fatigue, and her knees were bad especially her right knee (not sure of the cause but it was pretty bad it put her on bed rest for a while). After completeling Atkins it not only helped her lose weight but her knees are completely better now, she sleeps well, she's energized, her skin is clear, etc. Atkins is a way of life because it not only gets you to a healthy weight but your body gets so much healthier in ways too, does that make sense?

I'm so glad you're feeling better. I have pretty bad knees (strained), I'm looking forward to the day when my knees don't creek anymore climbing stairs or whatever. Keep up the good work!!!!

That is amazing. Good for your mum I bet she is really pleased with herself. Knees not working in fact any ache or pain just makes you feel oleder. I am a happy person usually but for the past three or four years I can see the change in my appearance and recently I just looked and felt older than I should.

I am gobsmacked to hear people still saying that the Atkins way is the bad way. From the sound of your own mums experience it is something that a lot of people should be doing instead of looking at other ways to try and get fit, slim and happy.

Thank you for your congrats by the way. A lovely warm day here in the UK I have been in the garden Cutting the Grass as an excersise for the day.

It's pretty nice here in Ohio too. Went on a nice walk with the baby. I can't stand how many people hate the Atkins WOL. It's frustrating because they don't know anything about it. They think it's eat all the fat and protein you want and no carbs kinda diet, it's not. If they just read the book they would understand! Have you noticed that once Dr. Atkins passed away not that many people are bashing him and his woe as publicly?

Re: I am a bit cross

We have been mowing the lawn, I am seriously thinking about borrowing a goat as I swear I can hear the grass growing again as I cut it.

People always make fun or are negative about things they don't understand, in fact some people have been really horrible about Dr Atkins saying that he died obese because his diet doesn't work and the weight doesn't stay off.

I wonder how many slimmers of the year who have been on low fat diets put the weight back on. Surely it is not the diet but the person who does not stay with the way of eating. Dr Atkins has done his best and the book is written with a great deal of understanding and care. You are so right more people should read the book.

At the moment I feel very angry with the medical professionals who cannot offer me a way of life which will make me slimmer and healthier but they are negative about the one I have found.

Way to go ! You have had such great success! Hopefully your doctor will see that Atkins is a great WOL by seeing the improvement it has made on your life and health. There's nothing better than "seeing is believing"
