  • Flax Meal Not all Created Equal!

I love the Miniute Muffins made with flaxmeal and wanted to share the recipe with my sister while visiting this weekend. The only flaxmeal I found in her store was a golden flaxmeal that came in a can instead of the bagged type I had been buying at home. I knew right away it was different cause the consistency was almost a powder.

I made the muffins anyway and she loved them but I thought they were nasty. Wait till she tastes the ones made with the normal flaxmeal. lol.

I think it is not the type of flaxseed used but how it is processed. So I am going to use up this nasty stuff, which apparently still has all the same low carb health benefits mby mixing it with my other flaxmeal. But wanted to warn anyone if you get a really powdery one and don't like it, don't be discouraged. Try the other.

chances are it's rancid, because flax contains alot of oils it goes rancid very easily (it also will not smell normal..almost paint like). I've bought both dark and golden flax, regular seed and milled/ground and they all taste the same. the ground however should be kept in a fridge after opened. I would actually recommend always buying seed and grinding it yourself with a coffee grinder.

When you grind flax the oils oxidize in the air. A much better option is to grind whole flaxseeds in a coffee grinder right before you need it and also store you whole seeds in the freezer.

I don't think it was rancid, I think it was the way it was processed. it was finely textured almost like talcum powder, but the ingredients were 100% golden flax seed, milled.
The other milled flax seed I buy whether golden or not always has a grainy texture like the fish food one of you mentioned. I love the stuff!
