  • Fiber Help

I have a fiber question and I figured who better to ask than you guys!! =)

I've been reading that a good amount to aim for is 20 grams a day. However, as my veggies are limited at the moment, I'm finding I'm getting around 5 grams (most of which are coming from my 1 cup of higher fiber veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, squash, etc).

I know that we can take 2 tbsp of Flaxseed Meal (4 carbs, 4 grams fiber) a day .. which would land me an additional 8...

    So here are my questions..

    01. Has anyone found that adding flaxseed meal has stalled their weight loss?
    02. If my normal meals for the day total 20 carbs, due to the whole "subtract fiber for net carbs" concept, is this not anything I need to count the carbs for?

I do want to increase my fiber but I also don't want to do anything I shouldn't, diet wise.

PS I did find this http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...fiber+flaxseed before posting.. but was curious if anyone knew why it was limited during Induction if it equals itself out?

Is it like certain pseudo sugars, do some people find their bodies react to it with a production of insulin like a normal carb, despite its fiber count?

      Re: Fiber Help

My guess is that either Dr. Atkins found a significant number of people had problems with it, or that there was a danger of eating too much fiber without drinking enough water.

I'd take psyllium husks over wheat bran any day. Wheat bran is way too harsh, in my opinion. I take a psyllium product and once I got used to the taste (think damp sawdust) it's become part of my daily ritual. Occassionally I have flax seed as a cereal. A couple of tablespoons of flax, some chopped nuts, a few goji berries and soy milk. It's not a bad as a change-up.

Flax is a food---it has calories and fat, unlike psyllium husk, which was Dr. Atkins' favored fiber supplement for constipation.

As for people stalling with flax seed--it may happen. How a food affects you is completely individual.

I noticed when I moved to OWL Phase, the additional 5 net carbs of any Induction vegetable increased my fiber intake. Likewise, when I moved up the Carb Ladder and added higher fiber foods like nuts, seeds, fruits, starchy veg, etc. my fiber intake increased too.
