re: Atkins proves to be most efficient diet

The scientists (in this 12-month study) say there was no evidence of health problems emerging after people have been on Atkins for a year. The Atkins diet, according to several critics, is the cause of health problems later on.
Does anybody know what they are talking about here? What are these critics saying would happen long term, and how can I avoid it? I know that aspertame is probably one of the causes. Is that all?

They are saying that because of all of the meat that you get high cholesterol and high blood pressure. But they are misinformed.

For some reason Atkins has attracted a following of people that HATE the diet ... I think this stems from them not believing in it in the first place and then getting proved wrong. I dont know ... It is strange how Weight Watchers doesnt have the same following of diet haters.

I am reading that to say that several critics say that Atkins causes problems later on but the study shows that even after 12 months the benefits are good.

Wish they had gotten 311 women who were from here and had all this support...they only averaged 10.4 pounds for the year?? I would have been surprised it that was the average after the 8 week induction period.

          Still...the news is good!!

re: Atkins proves to be most efficient diet

Oh. Okay. I have been worried about that...
To me.. logically thinking.... how could a regular human being with an "average" intelligence look at this WOE and find anythng wrong with it? Its like, a cult of people who don't have anything better to do.

I guess it is true that people can actually be that daft. It just does not register to me!

That being said, it caused me to think... what if there is something potentially harmful? Compoundng that thought, I noticed that one of our members had a brain tumor and thinks it was linked aspartame.

So, my mind has been reeling about artificial sweetners and how many more of them I have consumed since starting this WOE. Zero a day to 2-3 and sometimes 4 servings.

I decided to stop worrying about it and just switch to a natural sweetener.

and I will rest assured that I am doing the healthiest possible thing I can be doing! Thanks for the feedback.

You're right Elsie, 10 pounds?!! That must be a combination of 12 women who made it to goal, and 299 women who fell off the wagon after the first few days.

But aspartame isn't encouraged here, is it? I thought that was the bad sweetener..

You are right, Val - aspartame is one of the sweeteners Dr Atkins excluded from our WOE.

Re: Atkins proves to be most efficient diet

I have a booklet that was given to my husband when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He was told to read the book and try and lose some weight as he was obese, had high BP, high cholesterol. He was given no more help or advise just this book which was published by the British Heart Foundation.

He read the book which advised that he ate plenty of fruit and vegetables, plenty of starchy foods such as bread, rice, grains and potatoes. Small amounts of dairy food using low fat when possible, small amounts of meat, fish, beans and nuts using low fat when possible and tiny amounts of fatty foods.

There is a small paragraph about sugar saying that it counts as wasted calories and therefore you should wean yourself off sugar and use artificial sweetners instead.

Towards the end of the book it mentions "High Protein" Low Carbohydrate diets like the Atkins diet saying that this diet is not recommended for although it seems to work short term it does not fit with the requirements for a balanced diet and that it has not been tested for long-term safety and that there are no guarantees that it does not cause damage to health.

I am now feeling myself getting angry but there is more.

The passage goes on High proein means that kidneys have to work extra hard that protein burden may damage kidneys especially in people who unknowingly have kindeys not working as well as they should. Atkins may also cause kidney stones.

Then it goes on saying that ristricting foods such as fruit and vegetables and wholegrain cereals - which are known to have been associated with preventing coronary heart disease and diabetes is cause for concern and that low intakes of cereal and fibre can cause constipation and other bowel problems.

I believe that when ordinary people desperate to become slimmer and healthier read this sort of c**p in books handed out by health professionals they are sucked into the low fat high carb way of life which will inevitably stop them from losing weight and getting healthy.

Every day I am so grateful that I met someone who had succeeded on the Atkins way of life. I feel as if we have saved my husband from an early death, it is not a dramatic statement but the truth. The British Heart Foundation has only hunger and addiction to offer him.

                  Thank you Atkins.

I had to post an opinion, cause, hey! they gave me the opportunity In the article the editor had questioned if exercise wouldn't be better or both exercise and diet....so I wrote him/her a note saying IF THEY READ THE BOOK, they would notcie that Dr A. says exercise is non-negotiable
