  • Dr. Mike Eades on Calories and Low-carb

I don't know if it's been posted her before, but Dr. Michael Eades has two very informative posts on calories and low-carb...

Health & Nutrition by Michael R. Eades, M.D. » Caloric torpedos

Health & Nutrition by Michael R. Eades, M.D. » Low carb and calories, part 2

The gist of the posts are basically these:

    1. No matter how much you restrict your carbs, if you're eating too much calories, your weight loss will stall.

    2. No matter how much calories you eat, if you're restricting your carbs, you will find it very difficult to gain weight.

Also, Dr Mike zeroes in on two high-calorie low-carb foods that can wreck havoc on one's weight loss: cheese and nuts.

Don't I know it! I keep both out of the house for long periods, and then I go to the Amish bulk foods and cheese store, where nuts and cheese are not only very fresh and delicious, they are dirt cheap. I bought a lot of different cheeses and whole almonds a few days ago and even though I ate moderate amounts, I have gained 3.2 pounds that is not coming off. I can't eat even moderate amounts on a daily basis without gaining.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

I think this exactly why Dr. Atkins limits cheese and nuts during the weight loss phases. We don't need to worry as much about counting calories because he does it for us.

I love cheese!! Is it all kinds of cheese, or just the hard ones like Cheddar? Thank you for the post, very informative. I do keep my cheese intake to 4 ounces a day.
Try to get 80-100 ounces a day!

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.

Yup, I have given up nuts except PB in an occasional recipe. And cheese, I love it but I definitely have to limit to about 2 oz a day to keep losing (something I have not been doing this week so far).

I am not eating any kind of cheese, or nuts either. I cut out all dairy and for the first time I am losing very well. I also cut out the artifical sweetners too.
I find it easier to just stay away from them. It seems to be helping.

The thought of no cheese makes me -- and no nuts either? Aw -- er -- nuts!

Thanks for bringing that info to my attention. Cheese will (unfortunately) be the first thing I cut out if I find myself on a plateau...

Re: Dr. Mike Eades on Calories and Low-carb

It was so hard to do, but for me, it was a no choice thing. I am tired of working for weeks and only losing the same five to six pounds and going up and down, so I took a gamble and gave up the cheese and nuts and a huge one to me was the diet soda. I am used to two liters a day of diet dr pepper. I drink only water now !!
I am not sure if it is one thing or all combined, but I have never lost so fast and I am thrilled.
You just have to find what works for you, it may not have to be near as extreme as my plan !! That is just what I decided to do !!
I have no doubt you will find what works for you too !!

Re: Dr. Mike Eades on Calories and Low-carb

My teacher told me today that she read in a medical journal (sorry, forgot which one) that diet soda adds to belly fat! She said that it turns into toxins in your body, and that it collects in the fat around your belly! I was blown away! I don't drink much soda, but I will try to never touch that stuff again. I love water, so that isn't an issue. I just wanted to pass that information along.

I just eat like 1 cheese stick (1oz) a day for a snack. Hope that is acceptable.
