I eat an organic diet. I even purchase grass-fed beef. My days are filled with eating decadent whole foods. Then I decide to splash Sweet n Low into my organic freshly ground coffee. Ummm...hello? Help here! I eat an organic/whole foods diet, but yet I'm ingesting saccharin on a daily basis. This is just crazy. Why purchase anything organic when I'm going to drink "toxins" anyway?

I have a few questions that I hope someone could answer...

    1. Is Stevia healthy?
    2. What sweetener are you currently using and have you had any side effects?
    3. What are healthy alternatives to saccharin?

I am not willing to start using Splenda due to the fact that it gives me a headache everytime I use it. In general, I would like to get away from sweeteners created in a laboratory. I would like to use something all natural and eventually not use any sweeteners. Hey...a woman can dream

    Thanks in advance!

This is interesting reading...I just googled and this page was displayed:

Doesn’t Saccharin Cause Cancer? .: Ask Dr. Hull

Not sure who she is or anything about her, but I found it interesting.

      1. Yes. Stevia is healthy. It's extracted from a plant. You can buy it in liquid or powder form.

      2. I use Splenda and no- I have experienced no side effects after using it for more than 6 years. It's 2 sugar molecules & 1 cholorine molecule - no issues here.

      3. Stevia & Splenda are healthy no-sugar/carb alternatives. Other than that, you're pretty much left with honey - and that's sugar, as you know.

We're also supposed to use these things in moderation - which Dr. Atkins described as 3 servings of sweetener a day (3 packets/3 diet rites/etc). In the big scheme of things, this is really, extremely minimal so far as consumption goes. The studies done on all of the sugar alternatives are done with enormous amounts.

      All things in moderation

        Brook,

Thanks for your posting. I have been doing a coffee experiment...trying to wean myself off of coffee and so far it's working. I now drink 1 cup a day with sweetener. If I could stop drinking coffee, I wouldn't have a need for sweetener other than for baking. I'm trying to rid myself of addictions. First it was food (Atkins conquered that one!) and now it's coffee and sweetener. I'm a work in progress

I use Splenda and Stevia. I even found a Stevia plant so save the leafs from that. The kids have been told not to eat them!! Stevia (I have only tried liquid)has a slight...hmm...licorice type flavor to it. A little goes a long way. I am talking you use drops of it.

              Re: Sweeteners

              Hello Nicole,
I have an ongoing No Sweet Challenge going on this year. I believe you may be interested in the information I share regarding sweetners throughout the thread. Go to http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...challenge.html
I have been sweet free for 137 days today. If I were to use sweetners I would use Smart Sweet Xylitol (derivitive of birch) for baking and cooking, Use stevia in cold recipes. Both very healthy for you.
Maybe i'll see you at the challenge.
              Sincerely, Sherri

              SPLENDA (sucralose)
              Why is Splenda potentially harmful?
According to the Splenda International Patent A23L001-236 and PEP Review #90-1-4 (July 1991) Sucralose is synthisized by a five step process.
To illistrate the alarming "chemicle soup" required to create sucralose, listed are the chemicles used to produce this sweetner and to secure the chlorine does NOT digest in your body.
              1.) Acetone
              2.) Acetic Acid
              3.) Acetyl Alcohol
              4.) Acetic Anhydride
              5.) Ammonium Chloride
              6.) Benzene
              7.) Chlorinated Sulfate
              8.) Ethyl Alcohol
              9.) Isobutyl Ketones
              10.) Formaldehyde
              11.) Hydrogen Chloride
              12.) Lithium Chloride
              13.) Methonal
              14.) Sodium Methoxide
              15.) Sulfuryl Chloride
              16.) Trityl Chloride
              17.) Taluene
              18.) Thionyle
Splenda (made from sucralose) is created in the lab by using a complex process involving dozens of chemicles you and I can barely pronounce- let alone consume. Basicly, the chemists force chlorine into an unatural chemicle bond with a sugar molecule, resulting in a sweeter product, but at a price: a huge amount of artificial chemicles must be added to keep sucralose from digesting in our bodies. These toxic substances also prevent (hopefully) the dangerous chlorine molecules from detaching from the sugar molecules inside the digestive system, which would be a carcenogenic hazard.

I have been using NOW brand of Xylitol for a couple of months for cooking and baking, and it works very well. I plan to buy another bag soon.

Elsie - I've tried stevia before and I didn't notice any off flavors. I tried the NuNaturals brand of liquid stevia in iced tea. Which brand did you try?
