  • When Chicken isn't just chicken

Okay, so I may be a little slow on some things, but I was dismayed last night shopping at Walmart when I actually looked at the list of ingredients on the RAW CHICKEN!! No, dismayed wasn't the word. Appalled is a much better word!

The raw chicken (and turkey) has a solution injected into it that contains not only sodium and water and potassium benzoatead;fapgfaiudwhgQ (WHATEVER) but it also contained....SUGAR!

    SUGAR!!

You have GOT to be kidding me! I went through the meat market checking every package (much to my husband's embarassment I'm sure) and sure enough every package of chicken had some sort of "solution". In fairness, not all of them have sugar.

However, the one single brand I've been having every single day for the last month, has SUGAR! No wonder I've been wanting to binge on that chicken!!! Seriously!

We have to be oh so vigilant anymore. Why on earth would they need to inject raw chicken with sugar?? To keep addicts like me addicted. And, boy did it work!

Maybe we should start a list of products that have sugar where sugar shouldn't be!! That and high fructose corn syrup. Some of you may remember a couple years ago when I discovered that the Unsweetened Iced Tea I was drinking had HFCS in it! I was able to ditch like 7 lbs after I cut that out!!

Wow! I never even thought to read the label on RAW meat. I'm going to have to make sure I look at the labels now.

    Thanks for posting this.

SIGH...why do 'they' make eating healthy so darn difficult! I knew to read the ingredients even if it said 100% beef patties. But on RAW, whole meat. SAD!!

I know the feeling. Turkey breast was really high here for quite a while, so when Kroger had frozen turkey breast for 99 cent a pound, I bought three--never thinking I needed to check the ingredients. I immediately thawed one and noticed that it had 15% solution instead of the usual 12%. Sugar was the first ingredient, in front of water! Who wants sugar in their meat?

At one time, Wal-Mart's ground meat, including ground sirloin, had been injected with a 12% mystery "all natural" solution.

I so wish I could live on a farm again and raise all my food. I grew up on a farm with a mother that was way ahead of her time when it came to raising food that went into our mouth.

Maybe it will get better--Big Sugar sold out to the state of Florida so they can recover the Everglades. Maybe it will get so expensive to import sugar, they will stop putting it into everything.

                Hi Joy,
I think that's a fantastic idea. Start a list of foods/brands that the manufacturers sneak in forms of sugar. I'm all for it. We can even put a list in the No Sweets challenge if you'ld like. I remember the ice tea with you. For me it was horseradish and HFCS. I havn't been able to find any horseradish without it. So if anyone is reading this and knows of a brand, let me know. thanks. I miss my horseradish!
Let me know what you think about the food list Joy. I support it 100%.

The thing I worry about more than this is - can I trust the labels?

Chicken Sausage - 2 grams per link. I ate two for dinner on a day where I had eaten perfectly. My total carb should be about 15 for the day.

Ketostix test - out of ketosis. Hmmm......I worry I can't trust the labels.

Yep, it's really bad. I started buying whole free range organic local chickens that aren't injected and just cutting them myself (I did a youtube video on how to segment a chicken btw). It does cost more but since I eat more of it on Atkins I think it is even more important. You have to check everything. I just picked up some organic chicken broth because I was lazy and bam, 6 ingredients down... cane sugar! WTH puts sugar in their chicken broth!

BTW: check labels every time. I forgot what it was but there was something I always bought and didn't have sugar in it and then they reformulated it with sugar.

Very good advice! I read lables every time, now. They sneak sugar in foods that you never would think would ever have sugar. I really check when the front reads, "new and improved."

I bought Heluva Good Horseradish (found it in the dairy case near the dip at our supermarket)...no HFCS in it. The best was homemade from a small butcher shop we went to a while ago. Went back and they were out of it. They only make it certain times of the year .
