  • I love my Mom, but........

Well, my Mom just stopped over. I was just taking my Oopsie Rolls out of the oven. My mom loves to bake, and she brought a big piece of Humming Bird Cake (no worries, no real hummingbirds were harmed). It has banana, pineapple, sugar, blah, blah, blah. All the stuff that I either can't have right now, or don't ever want again. I told her on Saturday that I was committed to this WOL, and that I had lost 8 pounds!! She said she was happy for me, but today she seems put out that I wouldn't eat her cake. Just one bite! No way, one bite turns into the whole piece, turns into raiding the cabinets and/or going to McDonald's and pigging out. I have been down that road too many times before.
How do you guys handle friends and family when this happens?
Try to get 80-100 ounces a day!

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.

Well, if anyone can give me the same advice that would be awesome cause I haven't conquered the feeling that I'll offend someone for not eating something they made me......grr.

Ugh, sorry about that. Its hard enough trying to lose weight without having to deal with saboteurs. I would just tell your mother in a very nice way that you're very sorry if not eating her cake offended her however you expressed to her that you are committed to this WOL and that you don't appreciate her disrespecting your choices. She should be happy for your for trying to get healthy. You just have to be firm and stand your ground! Its tough but I bet she will think twice about trying to jam you up again. Good luck!

ummm... a lot of people know better now. I used every excuse from I don't like it, to saying I would eat a piece later (and then throw it out), but I figure honesty works best now... some people *do* learn, and try to figure out Atkins-friendly things to make for you.

          Hi Murphy's Mom,

Tricky, very tricky. Those of us who cook love to see the pleasure on others' faces when they eat our creations, don't we? As for your mum, is she doing what she has always done, turning up with fattening surprises? (that is what my own mother called cakes and sweets - she was always on a diet, but delighted in her fattening surprises).

I had a bit of that trouble when I first started, but now my family and friends have accepted that I will not be eating their sugary offerings. It takes a little while for people to get the message.

Maybe as your mum is an expert baker, try to get her on-side with you, for instance 'hey mum, these are the ingredients I can cook with, what do you think I can make?' or 'mum, these are oopsie rolls, incredible what you can make with egg and cream cheese, isn't it?'

Who knows she may come up with some fantastic low-carb creation we can all enjoy!

I hope you both work it out.

That is a fantastic idea. My mom is the same way, but I could see how she might just jump at a challenge to wow me with her kitchen creativity. I'll be giving that idea a spin next time I see her...

murph mom, just focus on your goal. Stay strong and resist temptation. Look how far you've come. Just to take a step back for cake, no way. You worked too hard. Keep going. Keep the faith. God Bless, Joe

Thank you everyone!! I just needed a place to vent. I will take the piece of cake to school with me tomorrow, all the skinny girls there will dive into it! It is so funny, these size 3 girls at school. They drink Mountain Dew and eat Pop Tarts and never gain a pound!! Oh well, I hate MD!!
Thanks so much, and I will try to get mom to make Atkin's friendly stuff, maybe a low-carb cookbook may be in her future!

Re: I love my Mom, but........

i've been through the same thing with my mom. this is the 4th time i've re-started atkins(and the last time). the last time i was on this woe, she started coming around, learning things i could eat. making thing for sunday dinners that i could eat. she would make a meatloaf with nothing but eggs as the binder and big cookers full of green beans. she still offers me things i can't have, but i've learned to just say "i can't eat that" or "it'll be a while before i can have that". she's always asking me if i can have this or that, and when i tell her that i can have something, she always says that she will make it the next time she has DH and i over for dinner. it's just may take some time for your mom to understand exactly how things work on this woe. keep on feeding her info on the workings of this diet.

even a better idea, how about going to linda's low carb recipe's site, printing out a bunch of recipes and asking her to make something for you from them instead of the sugary carby cakes, pies, or cookies. then she would atleast have an idea of the things you can eat.

You just have to stay firm. Sooner or later, when people see your strict resolve and witness your success, they'll get the message.

Getting your mum on your side by having her bake Atkins friendly stuff is a great idea. In OWL there are all those awesome nut flours to make cakes with!

First of all let me just say that Stewie rocks!!! He's my favorite

                        Secondly, they'll get over it.
My mom didn't get mad at me or got offended or anything because I didn't eat her food, BUT she nagged and nagged and nagged about Atkins. Then she saw that my health improved and she saw my weightloss. By the time December rolled around she was doing Atkins with me!
Most people will come around and they'll begin to understand why you choose to not eat those things, etc. It just takes time and there isn't really much you can do about the whole situation. They have to be understanding and that's not something you can control.
