    Complacency---smugness, contentment, etc.

I'm not even sure how to phrase this question, so if it sounds kind of odd or doesn't make sense, please let me know .

But how do you, or have you, dealth with complacency after you've lost a significant amount of weight? I guess what I'm trying to ask is what kept/keeps you going after you lost the weight after Induction or moved up a rung without getting off track and feeling smug, contentment, or complacent (happy where you were at because it was "safe")?

I'm fighting that "don't worry, be happy" feeling of being past the "5" mark on the scale...you know, the 205, 195, etc. I have plans to keep doing what I'm doing and a little more with exercise, but I have that fear of living in the 190s for the rest of my life because that's where I've weighed for the longest time.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

    Re: Complacency

Lisa...from getting the smugness of staying on plan...of not giving into temption...the happy feeling of losing yet a bit more. What about the high of getting to 189 and saying good bye to the 190's forever....NOW THAT IS GOING TO BE A FEELING!!! You are doing great. Stay true to the plan and you will get to experience the complacency of 185!

thanks for your understanding and postive thoughts, Elsie. You're right, 185 will be so nice. I could handle hanging around 185---for a little while. lol. Lots of persistance. Lots of staying on plan---doing it right.

        Hey,

good question, for me I have to avoid complacency otherwise I backslide slowly at first and then end up bingeing, cheating and usually gaining and feeling awful. Also i worry i only have a finite number of 'restarts' in me and I don't want to find out!

Also, looking at before and after pictures - mine and others - always makes me feel more positive.

Oh, good idea!!! I don't want want to know if I do either---it just takes so much out of me!

And your pictures show a great deal of work you've accomplished with this woe! I have a few "before" (actually like 5 years ago and one from this time around)---they do keep me on my toes as an ugly reminder of what happens when I get too complacent.

            Re: Complacency

Lisa, that is exactly what allowed me to fall of the wagon last time. As soon as you relax, the old habits sneak in. Even though you aren't at maintenance, you might want to ask those folks in the Maintenance theads. I would expect it is an issue they deal with all the time.

Oh, good point, chinadoll! It's kind of like watching your back when you're having to walk down the long, dark alley just waiting for something to sneak up and attack---then we're left holding more pounds, excuses, and justifications of why we did it. Being on guard and not letting those sneaky habits get to us. Thanks!

You're right with the maintaining crowd, I'm sure it's the same for them, too! It must be a commonality throughout each level, perhaps

                Re: Complacency

Lisa, you should check out a thread called "Maintenance Frustration" in the maintenance forum. There is lots of discussion about things we do to stay on track. It gives a little glimpse of what maintenance is like for several of us.

The "work" at this never goes away. There really is no return to our old eating habits. For me, I've worked so danged hard to get to this point, that anything that happens that causes weight gain kinda freaks me out and I'm right back, nose to the grindstone on plan.

Thanks for the direction to that thread, Joy. Getting to that level must be half the battle, but staying there has got to be the other half. Just like getting where I'm at right now---minibattle to keep going, bigger battle to not stop!
