  • Flushed after eating an apple?

Ok - so I ate a granny smith Apple after breakfast. I was stuck and had oatmeal (some hours earlier) and an apple instead of my usual eggs. Hey -someimtes - I just crave it. Truthfully - given my physical activity today - I wasn't really that stressed about it.

However - after eating the apple - I had a sensation I haven't had in years. Litterally, minutes later, my body started to throw off heat like there was no tomorrow. I get red & hot & sweaty while just sitting at my desk. Two minutes later - it just went away.

Has anyone else ever had this kind of thing happen after eating an apple or some other fruit? I've been searching and searching on the internet and can't really find anything about this. Back in the "bad old days" of eating high carb - I used to have this happen - but never on so little food so fast.

    Thanks!!

It could also be an allergic reaction.

        Maybe pesticide on the apple?
Sounds like what I do when I accidently eat shellfish, only I don't get lucky enough for it to go away, I end up in the hospital with 20 shots! :-(

I agree with the others. It could be anything from a blood sugar spike to a food intolerance issue.

Hi!! It is the strangest thing. You guys are keen-eyed-diet-watchers - because in 4 posts you've put out all I can find. People seem to really have this. Eating low-carb seems to change it - but a blood sugar spike that is THAATTT rapid?? I dunno. Food intolerance? I"m not so sure.

If I had to guess it is some glycemic reaction - but i wonder if one can pump insulin that fast.

Food allergy/food intolarance symptoms can occur immediately. I once worked with a nurse who was very allergic to peanuts. She accidentally grabbed a peanut butter flavored bagel one morning and just put the bagel into her mouth when she felt her airway begin to close. Lucky for her, we were in the intensive care unit.

Again, it might not be the apple, itself, but it could be the apple additives---the wax on the apple (if it was a commercially grown apple), the pesticides, etc.

And this is more likely than a sugar spike? Anybody ever flush after a candy bar or some such?

It's a sugar spike. It effect everyone different. The oatmeal and apple combined would have given you enough carbs for your body to IMMEDIATELY freak out. you'll be fine!!!

Also, the liklihood of being allergic to apples is lower than a fridge randomly materialising and dropping on you from nowhere! hehe

Re: Flushed after eating an apple?

I'd be interested to see some statistics on the occurrence rate of apple allergy to back up that analogy. I have a family member that has an allergy to raw apples. She can eat them cooked, as in apple sauce or apple pie, but not raw.

I have never heard of a body heat reaction to a "sugar spike". I would also like to see some links regarding that phenomena.

Thinker, perhaps you should talk with your doctor about the reaction.

.....and I've been having trouble w/this fridge.....

I think it has to be a sugar spike of some sort - but I can't find any reference to it anywhere. I know I'm carb sensitive.....maybe I've hypersensitized myself w/the low carbing....I dunno.

                        Pulse rate testing for allergies:
                        Appendix: Pulse Testing For Allergies

Creek, the raw VS cooked allergy happens. Cooking denatures proteins. So heating a food may denature the offending protein that causes the allergy for your cousin.

As for making yourself "carb sensitive" ...what is your CCLL and how much oatmeal and apple did you eat?

For all the talk about the "heart healthy" qualities of oatmeal, it's a pretty mediocre food in terms of fiber grams, which is what makes it "heart healthy". A quarter of a cup of dry oatmeal has only 2 grams of fiber, but 13 grams of carbs. Which means if you use 1/4 cup of oatmeal to make your porridge, you're only getting 2 grams fiber for every 11 net carbs.

A medium apple--an apple with a diameter of 3 inches---has 4.4 grams fiber (provided you eat the skin) and 25.13 grams carb. So that 4.4 grams fiber per 20 net carbs.

That amount of oatmeal and apple I listed if eaten on one day is already 31 net carbs. If your CCLL is 40, then you've already used 76% of your daily net carbs on 2 foods.

Hey - That is exactly right! The fiber content is only so-so. Personally - when I'm running in higher carb rungs - I do add these things. It saves me from eating eggs all the time at breakfast. Because the stuff is high volume per calorie - it fills you up nicely. But you are absolutely correct - it really eats up the rest of your carbs.

Oatmeal and apples have never filled me up. Even when I was a vegan, the "high fiber" foods never satisfied my hunger. So within 2 hours of eating a bowl of oatmeal and some kind of fruit or eating a grilled tofu sandwich (on whole grain bread with other veggies stuck inside it) I was ready to gnaw the tiles off the roof. That's why I used to over-eat as a vegan/vegetarian. I only learned when I was on Atkins that I wasn't getting enough fat in my diet to actually feel satified with my meals.

Actually - I really did have the opposite experience. A bowl of oatmeal made w/full fat milk (or 2%) mixed w/Walnuts really puts my appetite at bay.
