  • Concerns with Atkins

So I have been doing Atkins for about 6 weeks. Ive lost about 15 pounds and a noticable amount of inches. I am feeling great. But......

3 days ago, I started getting little pains in the lower part of my gut. The most noticiable are on the right hand side. I know you all arent doctors, but I'm a little concerned it might be related to the diet. Previous to the diet, I have and continue to have a fatty liver. Wonder if these are related.

    Anyone else had this?

This could be any number of things! If you aren't worried enough to see a Dr., you might want to try out some taurine supplements to see if they're just cramps that will go away

I don't know, i would recommend seeing a dr. I suppose. is it a sharp stabbing pain? that shoots on-and-off, or a pain that is constant? slightly noticeable? or debilitating?

I agree with the majority here. Go see your doctor. Abdominal pain can signal any number of ailments. Speculating about possible side effects will only prolong your suffering and cause whatever it is to escalate! Let us know how you are doing...my thoughts are with you!! With any luck it is just a giant ferocious gas bubble!!!! But better to be safe and find out for sure!!

                Re: Concerns with Atkins

Even with my nursing background, the only advice I have for you is:

                MAKE AN APPOINTMENT A.S.A.P!

It will give you a peace of mind. A lot of time I deal with patients who say, "I felt this pain a long time ago and just brushed it off". At least if you go you will know where to go from there.

From my own personal experience. My dad had heart problems and died of a heart attack when he was only 50 years old. I started having these pains on the left side of my chest, I thought for sure were heart problems, I googled and yahoo'd and msn'ed my symptoms and it just made me believe I was gonna collapse and die of heart problems.....so I ignore it because I didn't want to face the inevitable. I didn't want to be told I was dying. Anyway, one day it gets real bad and I think I'm having a heart attack so my husband forces me to go to the hospital. I have an EKG and some labs drawn and my heart is normal......perfectly normal, what I did have was an extreme case of gastritis and a very bad esophageal ulcer. I walked out with some meds and a quideline about what to eat and when, and I not only have not felt that pain again, but was ecstatic that I didn't have a heart problem. I could have saved myself a good 6 months of silent panic!

So please, take care of yourself and your sanity and find out what's going on from someone who knows!
                Keep us posted okay!
                Hope you feel better soon.

I get the pains in my belly (rt side mostly) when I'm constipated. Everything feels sore and sharp pains in lower abs. I'll drink more water and I see there's suggestions for flax and phsyllium husk.

                        Re: Concerns with Atkins

Ok, so I went into the doctor on Thursday. He asked the general questions and all, which I was happy to answer. I told him I have a fatty liver and the "cramps" I was feeling on the right hand side. I told him I was on Atkins and all he said was "mhmmm."

He told me I should go off Atkins because I needed healthy "carbs" and that all the protein I would eat would damage my liver. Funny enough, he referred me to South Beach Diet and gave me the book. I looked over the diet and didnt see a lot of differences in between them except they encourage eatting lean meats and low-fat cheese.

My metabolisim is low because I am not working out. (Yes, I know I should be doing that).

Has anyone had a doctor tell them to go off atkins and to do another diet? What was your experience with that?

As for the "cramps" on my right side, he said it could be gallstones forming. I still have the "cramps" every once in a while, but its not a pain. He wants to do an ultrasound on my liver and gallbladder.

                          Re: Concerns with Atkins

Sounds like your Doctor has only read the 'hype' of Atkins. You are eating healthy carbs on Atkins. Seriously...it drives me crazy when anyone thinks Atkins is unhealthy. Yes...if they aren't doing it by the book. But if it is done by the book as we advocate here how is it unhealthy? We have to eat 3 cups of veggies a day!!! I never did that before! Lucky to get 3 cups a week...and that was a good week! YEESH! I am glad he didn't write it off as part of Atkins because I think it is something else. You are doing well...keep on the plan...eat healthy...and you will do fine!

Thank you so much for the update. I have been checking this thread wondering how you were.

                            Re: Concerns with Atkins

Just an idea since the doctor said you were fine. Most people ovulate from either one side or the other and atkins often increases fertility. I know I am a lot more in tune to small bodily changes since being on atkins so you may be feeling actual ovulation.
