  • Not all hotdogs are created equal

My husband and I enjoy the occasional hotdog at a bar-b-que. I have thought they would totally be off limits because of the carb count ( many are close to 5 grams per serving). I have finally found one that we can eat once in a blue moon. They are the old fashioned weiners from Schwan's. Oh...dh is tickled pink!

In a jam or while down the shore with me girls I'll grab one, minus the bun of course, and enjoy it. One holds me over plenty, till I get back home for some home cookin. God Bless,Joe

        Hi,
I notice also that the Swann brand contains salt dextrose and MSG. Both a form of sweetner. Also "Flavorings" It doesn't say which kind.
Hebrew National Kosher hot dogs are a great choice for a healthy hot dog.
        Enjoy your summer.

Re: Not all hotdogs are created equal

That's crazy, I saw the "dextrose" in the "salt dextrose" and I was like....uhhhh sounds like a sugar, but has "salt" in front of it...or is it missing a comma? Thanks Sherri, you are always so informative with the sweetners!!!

Re: Not all hotdogs are created equal

From what I read salt dextrose is a component in iodized salt, even though it is technically a sweetner, if you eat iodized salt, you eat salt dextrose.

"Dextrose is added to stabilize the iodide. Iodine is vital to the proper functioning of the thyroid gland and the prevention of goiter. Actually, the amount of dextrose in salt is so small that it is dietetically insignificant."

So when you read 'salt' you can assume salt dextrose as well.
