  • 5 Days in.........2 questions:

Hey guys, I am 5 days into the induction phase and am really struggling!! I have 2 questions.

    1) I have cheated 2 times on purpose (2 biscuits and yesterday a TINY bit of sponge cake) and once by accident when I was staying in a hotel for work and as they had no steaks left I order the fishcakes............ ok, I had a brain fart and forgot they are also made with potatoes and are covered in breadcrumbs!! Oops..................does this mean I have to start the 2 weeks again or can it just go down as a slight lapse?

    2) I do exercise (Ju-jitsu, exercise bike) and since doing the induction phase have found myself sweating alot more than usual. Is this normal?

Also, I don't think i've lost any weight yet............ should results be seen in 5 days? lol

    Hope you can help,

    Matt

Matt, unlike most diets where a cheat is just a few extra calories or a little more fat, a cheat on Atkins means you are turning off the entire fat burning mechanism and switching back to the carb burning metabolism you had before. The biscuits would have definitely bumped you out of ketosis. They are a lot of starch and it is processed flour to boot, not even a whole grain. Yep, if you are serious, start over again. But if you do, get the 2002 book, read it, and understand what this is all about. It will make it alot easier to understand why cheating not only slows you down, but brings back the weight at an alarming weight. I suspect you would have shown a decent loss except that with the cheats you haven't yet achieved ketosis long enough to get your losses going.

The sweating may be due to induction. If it is related to induction it will pass once you finish a clean 2 week detox. I lift weights, do cardio 5x a week and don't really see a difference in my sweating. I DO have more energy though.

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

I agree with what China said about the cheats.

I sweat a lot more now because I'm drinking more water. I think that's how it works (correct me if I'm wrong). I try to get in at least 100 oz. of water a day and when I workout you could swear I just stepped out of the shower. When I'm not drinking as much water I don't sweat as much. Are you drinking a lot of water?

Yep I hate to say it but the cheats kind of mean you have to start fresh ..........make it a point to commit to two solid weeks of perfection food wise once you accomplish that and see the results you won't ever "plan" and cheat .......... it's just not worth it. Plan to succeed!!!!!!!

Yeah i do drink lots of water. I suppose thats why I sweat more when I exercise - seems logical.

So i'll have to start over again...............damn...........lol. The part I really struggle with is once i've had a meal, i get bit peckish say an hour later and before I wouldve had a quick sandwich, cereals or something sweet............but now I dont know what to have as I dont always fancy a slice of beef or scrambled eggs......... lol HELP!!! lol

if you are getting hungry with in an hour of eating, you may not be eating enough. why don't you post a day or two of menus and let us take a look at it. you may not be getting enough fat or protein with each meal. you shouldn't be getting that hungry that quick. as far as snacks go, you could eat some celery, or cucumber slices, a slice of cheese, hard boiled eggs, really the choices are endless as far as snacks go.

No - you dont have to start recounting your 14 days of induction. If yesterday was day 5 then today is day 6.

The reason here we suggest that you carry on with your original 14 days count is that if you start counting again after a small 'lapse', you will most likely get a more skewed result in your 14 days loss than if you just carry on till the 14th day now. You will already no doubt have lost the 'water weight' most people lose at the start of any 'diet' and would therefore be omitting that loss when you look at the chart in DANDR to find out your likely metabolic resistance to weightloss.

So as with any 'lapse' make sure you get straight back into eating correctly according to whichever stage of Atkins you are currently at.

If you had been off Atkins eating for several days and put weight back on, then there would have been a case for restarting induction, but luckily you have caught yourself before this could happen
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

As to this question, Matt, it is a YMMV thing (your mileage may vary) LOL
Some people lose quickly the first week and then nothing in the second week of induction, some lose nothing the first week but lose pounds the next, some lose nothing in the 14 days at all but go on to reach goal when their body decides to drop those pesky pounds
Try to wait out the 14 days then weigh and measure to see your own results. BTW have you made a note of your starting measurements - chest, waist, hips, thighs, calves, upper arms etc so you can gauge your progress in those times when the metal monster refuses to acknowledge your hard work by dropping down a bit?

Of course by choosing to eat offplan you are jeapordising (sp?) any weightloss you might achieve. So you need to make better choices.

What I did when I started induction 5 years ago was to make sure I had plenty of legal tasty highfat snacks prepared (and I do mean plenty - more than I thought I could ever want to eat). So when I felt hungry - even if I had eaten a meal recently - I could eat something to make me feel less deprived.

If you find it happens all the time, then maybe you need to plan bigger more satisfying meals to see if that lessens the hungries between meals. I find that a highfat meal keeps me full for longer than a lowfat one.

and I try to always keep this in mind.

Thanks for the advice and help Elizellen!

Is salami allowed on the induction phase?
And what about dilute cordial drinks? Or should I go just for a sugar free one?

Cordial drinks? Yikes, No!! As for salami, make sure it's sugar free....read the labels. Deli meat varies a lot and some have so much "stuff" in there that it seems reading the ingredients will make you gain weight!!
As for your hungries, how about eating every 4 hours or so?

Thanks. I've noticed its become alot easier in the second week in terms of resisting foods I struggled with last week.

Last week I struggled really badly. Seeing desserts pass by me in a hotel restaurant and even making a sandwich for my son was a struggle - this week I don't even think twice about it.

Well............2 weeks done and I have lost 8lbs. Quite happy to say I haven't strictly been sticking to the diet and had a blow out completely last weekend at two BBQ's - couldnt help it and I did feel bad afterwards but the burgers and wine looked so good. lol

I am now at a quandry..............as I havent actually been strict on the induction, should I give it another week, or even a complete 2 week re-induction. I now have the mental strength to stick to it 100%.

                            Any suggestions?
