  • New to site but need help!

Hello everyone! I just found this site and am very glad that I did! I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me. I am in my sixth week of Atkins and started off losing weight very quickly....23 lbs in a month. However that past two weeks have been very frustrating. Not only have I not lost any weight, I actually gained two pounds!!!!

I am still on an extended induction phase (<20gms per day) and have not changed my eating habits but my weight loss has completely stalled.

For some background I allow myself two cups of coffee with 1tbsp of heavy cream each morning and one serving of food containing aspartame such as diet soda or jello each day. (I guess that's a no-no but didn't seem to hinder weight loss initially.) A typical day's menu includes two eggs w/ three strips of bacon for breakfast, grilled chicken w/ salad greens and blue cheese dressing for lunch, and either chicken or beef with salad/dressing for dinner. I also allow myself a couple of ounces of cheese and a handful of almonds during the day for a snack.

I use Ketostix every day and they always turn deep purple, drink lots of water and exercise. What to heck is going on?!!!!?

    Hello,
Don't be discouraged! I stalled for like 2 weeks and then all of a sudden it just started moving downward again. It will come, just don't let it get you so down that you waiver. You can do it, just know that you are at about the same time into this as I hit my stall, and yes I gained a couple pounds but they fell off soon after the stall was over. Hang in there.

you need more carbs. your body has becomed accustomed to the amount of calories and types of food you are putting in it, and you have stalled due to no variation.
go into OWL and it'll jump start the weight loss again.
you could also be losing inches and not lbs, there is a really good thread in here about weight loss not being linear

Be careful with the almonds. They are not allowed on induction.

Focus on what you've lost and keep the pace. Your body just needs time to catch up and then it will begin to lose again. I agree with Trinity -- I tend to stall when I feed my belly the same menu day in and day out. Mix it up a little and see what happens. Try to take your mind off the scale by playing around with adding or removing assorted items to your diet to see how it affects you. I also find that browsing this site instead of stressing over my own problems helps to ease the anxiety and expectations I'm holding on to for no good reason. Most nutritionists and fitness gurus talk about 1-2 pounds of weight loss per week. You could stall for another 3 weeks and still be ahead of the curve (although I doubt you'll have that problem if you just stay strong!). Good luck!

I think your body is telling you that you have been on induction long enough (except for the almonds). Most people (me included) started losing faster after we started moving up the ladder.

Secondly, it is common after big losses for your body to pause while it tries to catch up to all the changes. Usually you are changing shape and losing inches while the scale doesn't move or goes up a couple of pounds. If the scale is causing you grief, stay off the thing. Measure instead.

maybe you're gaining muscle? maybe you've hit a plateau and you need to ride it through and then you'll get a "whoosh", maybe your body is taking time to adjust to it's new lower set-point, maybe your body has gotten used to a monotonous exercise routine and you need to change it up to challenge yourself again. The body can get used to an exercise and hinder it less effective, it's important to have an ever-changing routine. Maybe your body is like "dude, this is all we can lose without cutting out those cheats" (ie: caffeine/nuts/sweeteners).
