  • first day by the book

    hi,
i have lost over 30 pounds in 30 days through a protein/starvation diet. i don't even really get hungry anymore but i have stalled and that is most likely do to a lack of carbs and my metabolism slowing down?

so anyhoo~ today i start the program by the book.
but im not sure if i should do the induction or what? the last month i have had about 600-700 protein calories a day at the most with maybe 3 carbs.

im ready for 20 carbs a day, hehe the emotional roller-coaster of starvation is no fun!

any thoughts in terms of induction?

    TY,

I would suggest doing induction, by the book. A protein/starvation diet is definitely not a healthy way of doing things, even if you did manage to take off 30 lbs that way. You need to get the healthy fats and carbs into your system.

So, if you don't have it, get a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR), version 2002 and read it. I think it explains a lot and will give you a good foundation on what you really need to succeed.

    Best of luck to you.

Calling it GOAL at this point. I'm happy with where I am now and hope to stay there, or maybe even take it down a little more.

      thanks rick.
i have the book but need to check the version when i get home.
um, not to be a complete boob here but are you talking about the 14 day induction?

today i had 3 eggs and some cauliflower for breakfast and have felt guilty all morning...guess it's a symptom of the starvation thing. i am really looking forward to a more balanced mental state and i think the carbs will help?

They will help. You also need to repair your metabolism after doing that to your body so many small balanced meals will help (carbs, fat and protein at all meals). Be a bit patient as you are allowing your body to adjust to more normal food. But you will get there. So how much are you trying to lose? Good luck.

          liv,
thank you for the support. i am trying to shed 75, from 248 to 175ish but looking at the faq page and using the hills-bmi calc it showed that 190 was the peoples choice for my stats so i danno.
i just want to be able to take my shirt off at the beach without my friends saying "what are you going to name it"
          hope this helps>

I hear you. Sometimes friends are your worst enemies.
Exercise will help you as well (in that area). I don't know if you are up to it but when you are there are many challenges you can enter on this board to keep you going.

Yep, that would be the one. It wouldn't be right to say that you're on extended induction when you still need to get the fats and carbs back into your diet. Besides... induction is induction. There's really no difference in the 14 day induction and extended induction. Extended induction just means that you've made it through the first 2 weeks successfully, and are not quite ready to move into OWL (ongoing weight loss). A lot of people hang out in extended induction for quite a while, others move straight into OWL. Whatever works...

Again, good luck, and Liv has given some good advice here too. Exercise is a must in Atkins... If you're not getting it (exercise), you're not doing it (Atkins). And remember, any exercise is better than none.

                challenges?
and yes i do work out at home (bow-flex & free weights). the work outs have been hard to maintain though for lack of energy and motivation.
and yes the friends.... work in a biz where a large % of the men have perfect bodies and let me tell you they will be the first to tell you what they think of you, arge

                it's all good though

Re: first day by the book

Welcome! Congratulations on making a decision to do this the healthy way! I went to university for Nutrition Psychology, so I totally understand the part about being around people who judge you for your body. (how can you be going to school for nutrition if you are fat?) Welcome and good luck getting going on a proper induction!

Re: first day by the book

I would stay off the scale for a while. After starving and eating no carbs at all, you might go up a few pounds while your body adjusts to having more calories, carbs and fat. A lot of the weight you lost probably included muscle tissue.

I wish you had read the book before trying to do it the hard way. Many people, including me, lost almost that much in the first month, doing Atkins by the book. No starvation at all involved.

Another comment: Do this for your own self. Don't even do it for your family. But for heavens sake, don't do it for 'friends' that would make negative comments to your face. You own your body and how much you weigh and how healthy you are is your responsibility. Develop the mind set that you will work to improve your health until you can look in the mirror and like how you look.

What other people look like doesn't reflect on their personality and I've seen some people built like models, but they weren't attractive because of their personality. Anyone that doesn't want to be around you because of your body shape is not a friend.

                        Sunny!
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

                          sunny,

thank you for the kind words!
as far as the "friends" go~ it's all ok with me. i am dropping this weight for me and really don't care what they say, ya know.
the scale monster will stay tucked under the end table for a week. it's the guilt of eating again that will be the hard thing for me as i felt a wave of it after breakfast.

anhoo back to the salt mine, ciao
