  • Unbelievable!!

    I must share...

Let me give you a quick background. My Dr. is the daughter of my original Dr. who passed away 2 years ago. Original Dr. was all about Atkins. Daughter - well, not so much. She prefers lean meats, low calories, weight watchers style of "dieting." So last appointment in June I had high blood pressure, sugar levels were all over the place and of course I weighed more then I do now. Plus, I was miserable! During this visit, Dr. suggested gastric bypass and gave me pamphlets. I told her then aboslutely not - it is not for me. I can correct my changes without being forced. She asked me to think about it and come back in 30 days to see if I made any changes.

I had my 30 day follow up. She comes into the room and says "my nurse tells me today is a good day for your visit - that you have lost 17 pounds!" Her excitement got me into pointing out how my blood pressure also dropped 40 points and my blood sugars are relatively below 110. It was a great difference in only 3 weeks. I went on about how much better I feel, how I wish I never went off, etc. etc.

So you think this would be enough for her to say "keep up the good work" No. She asked how much I am exercising. I told her I just started and plan to do about 45 minutes on the treadmill 3 times a week with some stretching, squats, and crunches. She wants me to do 60 minutes and not the ab work. She then tells me I won't lose weight so fast, and I need to know that the bigger the person the faster the initial loss but then it will slow and possibly stop for awhile. I just smile and nod. She then starts pitching Alli to me and switching from low carb to weight watchers by saying "Now that you know you have the discipline to diet, lower fat and calories is the healthiest option" I chuckled but at the same time was PO'ed!!!!

I am sure my very pale light skin turned bright red with anger in my face. Her body language changed, she sat back and just waited for what was going to come out of my mouth. I politely said "please look at my chart from 2003-2004 when your father (who passed) praised Atkins and my weight loss. Please look at how my cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and blood sugar was the best it ever was - and I was still fat. NO, I don't want a pill, surgery, or weight watchers. I am training myself to no longer fail at eating. I failed once and won't again. And following a diet of having ice cream and pizza as long as my points allow for it DOES NOT WORK FOR ME. I no longer think this is the office for me to have medical care because I need support, not nea saying by my own physician."

I stood up, grabbed my purse, and started to turn the knob. She actually put her hand on my arm and said she doesn't want me upset, and she looks forward to seeing me in October for more improved results. I just said, "on low carb you will" - she shook her head. I am tempted to stay with her just to show her wrong!

      Re: Unbelievable!!

I just went to my Dr. today and told him about the chest pains I was having. I asked him if he thought that they had anything to do with my Atkins WOE, I was supprised when he said, "I doubt it, your doing great keep up the good work, I bet it is a muscle." "Have you started exercising?" and well yes I have so he is probably right, that is what it feels like, but wanted to make sure. My Dr. is so impressed that he says if I lose all my weight he wants me to do a class for some of his patients. (Not that I will, but it was nice he asked) I hope you can find a Dr. like mine if you switch, cause your so right support is important.
      Love, Light and Blessings

        Kathi,

I am sorry to hear that your Dr. acted that way towards you. Your weight loss and improved health is WONDERFUL and should be commended.

I would have felt the same way as you sitting in that office. As much as it sucks to try and find a new doctor, I personally would rather be treated by someone who supports my weight loss efforts no matter what they are.

It's truly unfortunate that most health professionals are out to make a quick buck and push any pill or other solution that will make them more money.

I am very lucky to be treated by a Dr. who not only saved my Grandmother's life but also strongly recommends the Atkins diet to his patients who struggle with weight. Including me.

          Re: Unbelievable!!

Some people, including doctors, can be so dense... this just makes me want to get sick.

Why can't people see that we are doing better on Atkins than anything else they have suggested?

Thank goodness for the good doc's. I'm lucky to have one that not only accepted what I've done, but done it himself. He actually asked how I'd done it, and tried if for himself... and, he's down about 50 lbs now. I don't think I have to argue with him anymore.

              Re: Unbelievable!!

I would be so tempted to stay just to show her up as well! You can use this as motivation. A sure motivator for me is for someone to tell my I CAN'T do something. It makes me even more determined to do it and rub it in their faces. Do it, show her, then leave her practice and tell her exactly why! You may actually be able to educate the HER and pave way for other patients.

                      Re: Unbelievable!!

This is exactly why i dont use the words "atkins" too often when asked about my 65 lb loss. I say I cut out bad carbs, all white starches and sugar. Heck, thats atkins but I dont have to use that word because its a 4 letter word to some drs or ppl. When ppl are seriously interested though and ask even further I tell them atkins and explain that the whole diet isnt like the first 2 weeks and they sware they are going out to get the book. Im a walking testimony for atkins and Im still going and I love it.

Perhaps weight watchers will work for some but Im not the kind of person that can have just one piece of cake or an occasional treat because that triggers my insatiable sugar tooth and its all downhill from there. This is the ONLY WOL that works for me and Im sticking with it.
