  • What to order at a chinese restaurant?

    There was a post:

asking about what to eat at chinese restaurant. I also thought that this should be a thread of its own as this is probably fairly common.

I usually order ribs ( no sauce ) and egg foo young ( no onions and no sauce ... or a few dribbles for taste )

What are your tips for eating chinese?

Re: What to order at a chinese restaurant?

I just never go! Its the one food I really miss. Everything has carby sauces and I am just afraid of what may be in it so I just avoid it. Saturday at school everyone ordered Chinese, I was so sad! LOL I just ate the food I brought and stayed away from them while they ate. It was hard, but worth it. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear it, also.
Try to get 80-100 ounces a day!

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.

Re: What to order at a chinese restaurant?

        Hi,

Here are some suggestions from about.com:

        The Safest Choices

        • Clear thin soups like egg drop, which is usually thin
        • Steamed food, including whole steamed fish or steamed tofu with vegetables.
        • Meat and vegetable combinations with thin, savory sauces (a small amount of sugar may be added, perhaps a teaspoon (4 grams of carb) for the whole dish. Examples would be (in many places) chicken with mushrooms, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Szechuan prawns, and curry chicken. Again, use your eyes and taste buds to figure whether the sauce is sweet and/or thick.
        • Stir-fried dishes without sugar or starch (normally there may be a small amount, perhaps amounting to a gram or two of carb per serving)
        • Black bean sauce does not tend to be carby as some of the others (there is a very small amount of beans in the sauce)
        • Mu Shu without the wrappers
        • Walnut chicken is usually not made with starch or sugar
        • Egg Foo Yung (without gravy)
        • Mongolian Barbeque, while not Chinese, is near to it. It is a good choice, as you can choose your own meats and vegetables and prepare them to order

Practice saying the following sentence: “Is it possible to have this dish without sugar or starch?” Many (but not all) restaurants will do this for you. An alternative is to ask for the sauce on the side.

I usually order steamed broccoli and a plain grilled meat, and ask for an authentic dumpling sauce (soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, garlic and hot pepper)
But I have, successfully, ordered different menu items and asked that they not be made with sugar or starch.

Don't forget to tell them to hold the MSG too. It's pure beet juice (sugar)!

If you have a choice opt for Mongolian Barbecue. They have all the fancy terriyaki and mongolian sauces but ask the cook to use soy sauce and/or vinegar instead. Tastes wonderful, plus, you get to pick what's going in your stir fry.

How about salted and peppered spare ribs as a starter crispy hong kong duck(without the soy sauce or is that allowed) or a half roast duck, the only downside is the duck dishes are the most expensive items on the menu

I usually have non-breaded chicken wings, if they have them or steamed veggies and chicken with no sauce.

I have to go to the City in order to get nearly authentic Chinese food. All the carry out places here use sauces, starch, sugar, etc. (Pretty sad when the steamed chicken has a decidely sweet taste!)

I always use to order the chicken and cashew nuts dish, as we ordered alot and I stayed in ketosis and it didn't stall my weight loss.
