  • I cheated!! what now??

Today was day 14 of a very clean cheat free induction and my first ever go at the atkins thing. Well I went with my family to our local amusement park and well, I ate ice cream!! What was I thinking, I dont know?? I just ate it. So now what, I am no longer peeing pink on those dag on strips. Start fresh tomorrow, quit all together, I dont know what to do now, it was going flawless until today, day 14.
By the way I had lost 5.8 lbs in the last 13 days of my 23 total to lose.

If you don't let this mess up your head, and cheat even more, if you go right back to low carb foods, you will probably get back into ketosis within a day, and won't have hurt your process too badly. Personally, I would do induction another week, then start OWL.

And hey... DON'T let it mess up your head! You can do this!

hey thanks momtomany1 !! I dont have the mind set of go ahead and eat whatever now/rest of day. I did have a low/0 carb breakfast and lunch and after the ice cream blip I had a great low carb dinner. I will surely do induction for another week. THanks for your quick reply, I needed it tonight.

        Wow!!!

What great advice for you. I didn't realize that if you immediately got back on board you could get back into ketosis fairly quick. After all the re-starts for me....I let it get to my head and mess me up even more. I love the way she worded that.

I agree....Don't let the cheat mess with your head! Move forward...You are doing fantastic with your weight loss.

I am on day 3 of Induction, but I have no plans to cheat this time around. I just wish I would have not let it mess with my head a long time ago. LOL

        Best wishes...You are doing great~

I agree. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep going strong. I would probably get right back on induction and up the water intake.
Everyone (well almost everyone) will have a moment where they slip up, the real challenge wasn't fighting the craving, it's the decision about what you're going to do from there on out. Lesson learned right? So take it as a positive reaction.
Way to go on your clean induction, that in itself deserves a congratulations!

I am really happy that you asked this question. I was thinking about it all day. I did not cheat - yet - but I need some . My son wants to go to "The Melting Pot." We went to one in DC and we had a great time. It was something that we talk about all the time. Not just about the food which was more fun that it was a delicious meal. We loved the fun on fondue. I know that I can do the cheese fondue with broccoli, and the other veggies they serve, avoiding the crutons. Salad will be OK. I know I can do the meat and there are some more veggies with the main course, but no bourguignonne with the batter, but they have broths that you can simmer the meat in to cook it - BUT no cocktails and the desert. Chocolate fondue with cheesecake, bananas, strawberries, pound cake, - yummmmmmmmmm. Should I just not go?

I think if it sounds a bit dangerous to you at this point, I would wait. I don't know about everyone else but for me, the longer I invest in something the more inclined I am to be diligent about it. For example if I'm only a couple days into this WOE, and I cheat, I may fall off the wagon completely....but for me right now, I've been doing this for 2 months and I feel like I have so much to lose to go off track, so if I went to a place like Melting Pot (have one here too....dee-liiiiiiiiish...) I trust myself to just stick to the legal stuff. So what I'm trying to say is, Melting Pot is not going anywhere and unless you completely trust yourself, I would postpone it for a while...maybe even for some higher rungs where you'll be a bit more at liberty to eat other things. Choose an alternative where there will be no room for mishaps and something wonderful on the menu that you all can enjoy...
              Hope that helps!

                Re: I cheated!! what now??

Aidinmom if you think you can go and are strong enough to say no to temptation then of course go. If you don't think you are going to be able to do that then maybe wait until you know you are strong enough to say no.

However, if you do decide to go just fill up on all the good fatty and Atkins friendly food so you won't be hungry enough to cheat! That's a dangerous idea but it could work.

I agree with the cheat. I know I've done my fair shair of cheats (unfortunately), the key is to not give up. Get back on the wagon and keep it going!

                  Re: I cheated!! what now??

Look to the future and try to learn something from the past. What was it that triggered the decision to eat the icecream? Was it that you were feeling relaxed and just wanted the cherry on the cake? Or that you'd finished induction so thought you deserved a little treat as a reward? Or did you need the "comfort" (so called) of a little something, for some reason?

If you manage to identify what triggers your cravings, then you'll be able to make a plan and take steps to avoid those triggers in the future.

Keep right on as you planned. You can do it!

                    Re: I cheated!! what now??

THanks everyone, you're great. My reason for eating the ice cream was just that I wanted it. I have been many places while in induction and have felt completly deprived, almost robbed!!? I guess maybe I was feeling a little rebelous. We all know that on other plans there is always a little cheat room, I wasn't feeling this with atkins and I was feeling trapped. I honestly know that I cannot give up everything (food wise) forever. I have to be able to enjoy a treat every once in a great while or I know I will fall hard core. Is this okay on atkins? Not whole days of binging but the occassional tiny bit of ice cream or something in that comfort/tastes sooo good grouP?

                      Re: I cheated!! what now??

You need to ask yourself why you are in this predicament in the first place. Then ask yourself what is most important to you being thin or eating ice cream. It is that simple. You have to work on your motivation or you are not going to succeed. We do a CLEAN induction so that we can work on overcoming carb binging. If you allow yourself to have one the whole thing is pretty pointless in my opinion.

                        Re: I cheated!! what now??

I would say, no, don't give yourself permission even for the little cheats. They are not okay because they tend to lead one to the other. I figured, an amusement part ice cream could not have been that large, it isn't like you ate a whole carby meal. One amusement park ice cream will clear your system pretty quickly, but that doesn't make it okay! You need to think of okay 'treats.' Get to the dairy rung and the are low carb ice creams. Get to the nut rung and there are macadamias and almonds, etc, treats that do your body good. Even on induction, some of the foods are so luxurious, they really are like treats! It might take a little imagination, but imagine piling a few grilled shrimp in an avocado half and try to feel deprived!

I am not an expert on what 'insulin spikes' do to sabotage your weight loss efforts, but I know they are not 'good things.' We need to skip the sugar completely. You will feel more even, energetic and in control if you do not allow any little cheats. And in life, feeling like you are in control and not outside forces like tempting foods is a big advantage!

Here is rule #5 of induction:
Eat nothing that is not on the acceptable food list. And that means absolutely nothing! Your "just this taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins.
